What's going on here is that unrelated libertarian principles are being recoded as issues of free speech. All of sudden preventing algorithmic harm becomes leftist censorship, and the culture war is used as a bulwark against government regulation of discriminatory technologies.

"Algorithmic decisions about parole, loan approvals, interest rates, program admissions, insurance premiums, security clearance, etc. that depend on race and ethnicity? That's not discrimination, it's *speech*."

Musk has used "Vox populi, Vox Dei" to justify reinstating Trump on #Twiiter. But the quote is from a letter from Alcuin to the Emporer Charlemagne urging him to resist such ideas, "Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit." Which translates as "And do not listen to those who keep saying, 'The voice of the people is the voice of God', because the tumult of the crowd is always close to madness."
Today is #TransDayofRemembrance when we honor and remember trans lives taken by violence. How horrifying that a deadly attack upon the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado Springs should occur right before this solemn day.
Hate isn’t born in us. It is taught. It must end.
This starts with our political leaders, who must cease their cynical attacks against our community before another attack occurs.
Call out the hate. Remind them of its consequences. Hold them to account.
Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.

I have a patient w/a severe life limiting condition & its most feared complication.

And yet the biggest barriers to good health for him?

SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH.

All of the scientific advances in the world mean nothing if society can’t provide for our most basic needs.

Another mellow Friday evening on Tomales Bay, have a great weekend.

Prediction: however people try to settle the CW debate… the CW will evolve into something with many purposes in different contexts. You can’t give people a special text box on the internet and not expect them to do all kinds of stuff with it.

(I think the Content Warning will be one of a variety of uses, tho, so that should keep long-time users happy. It’s a nice thing to have.)

Wow. This needs to be read by everyone who joined Mastodon in the last week: https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/

The fediverse is dealing with a huge wave of Twitter people bringing toxic ideas with them.
