Let the latest Ticketmaster fiasco serve as a crucial reminder: We must revive antitrust law and stop the monopolization of America. Now.

It's like watching a train wreck. What happened to the concepts of social responsibility and the public good?
Robert Reich @[email protected] on the consequences of #capitalism without guardrails and the empirical evidence disproving expectations of Chicago School #trickledowneconomics. We *need* #antitrust b/c capitalism w/o guardrails is nothing more than winner-take-all private #rentierism. (Rentierism = profits above what a well functioning market would allocate. Profits from #pricegauging," for example, are an example of this kind of "economic rent.")

Examples: Oil companies using the opportunity of tighter supplies in the pipeline to skyrocket prices immediately even though current supply levels were adequate." Monopolies can manipulate prices at will. Oligopolies can, too: Signaling with price changes takes the place of actual f2f collusion.

I have always appreciated your love of country, your willingness to share your knowledge and beliefs and your dedication to the preservation of our democracy. Thank you, professor! I share your beliefs and wishes. I am very glad to have found you here. 😊
@rbreich with Brexit, i have a horrible feeling that the current government in UK is moving along this path - already water is a monopoly, telecoms is moving the same way and we now lack the intervention of EU and Courts, along with a bonfire of eu laws due soon. Thanks for your interesting Video
@rbreich This is what was recommended after watching your video. lol! Youtube is weird!

It seems like we have a new crop of Robber Barons nowadays. And a Supreme Court not likely to clash with them.
@rbreich #Mastodon being a good place to launch an anti-trust revival. Go man, go.
@rbreich
Long, long overdue for those tech firms, Robert. We're being SCAMMED not just in USA but all over planet.

@paul_briley @rbreich I couldn't agree more. Way long over due.

I'd like to share this. I found it an impeccable read.

@rbreich we need to demonopolize America at this point we need to own the fact we have gone further than we would like to admit.
@rbreich the self destruction of federal regulating agencies since the Reagan era is mind boggling
@rbreich can we please stop giving Swift a pass in all this?
@rbreich Don’t we need to take back our government first?
@rbreich starting now antitrust must include anticompetitiveness considerations as well as market domination.
@rbreich also, stop putting up with terrible customer service
@rbreich and abolish Citizens United while we’re at it
Save student loan debt cancellation and extend the payment pause!

In August, the Biden administration announced an historic student debt cancellation policy, which would transform the lives of tens of millions of borrowers across the country. Despite President Biden possessing the authority to cancel student debt as per the HEROES Act, passed by Congress in 2003, right-wing MAGA Republicans have filed numerous lawsuits challenging the legality of student debt cancellation. Now, a Trump-appointed federal judge has officially blocked the cancellation...

Is it too late? Need more #s in Congress that will put the country first.
@rbreich how do we know you are the real person?

@rbreich

Through constant focusing on our economy since the early 1970s, when Watergate brought shame to almost anyone with an (R) after his/her name, a huge portion of the voting public has been convinced that "successful" business owners should be part of our government. And of course, these people are pro-trust and anti-public good, so I don't see any revival of anti-trust legislation coming anytime soon.

@rbreich
We the people continue to lose. Why not instead plead with Congress and the rich&Corp? We don’t benefit from monopolies; they do and they have the power to enact laws or rather to enforce the laws on the books. Americans love capitalism more than democracy. Monopolies control prices rather than supply and demand. Right now, big oil and gas has forced us to pay higher prices, decades after ending dependence on foreign oil.
@rbreich When or if it happens please don’t let the guilty plea deal their way out of jail as a kindly meant suggestion. Otherwise they call it the cost of doing business.
@rbreich agreed! How Ticketmaster got to this point is bonkers to me. It’s even worse in Canada with basically no competitors.
@rbreich The number of ways Ticketmaster makes money in every ticket is disturbing. Convenience Fee. Electronic Delivery fee. Processing fee. Then they own the promoter who gets a cut of the tickets. Can't go? They'll get rid of your tickets for a fee. And they'll take fees from the person who bought them too. They get paid by American Express to allow early access to tickets. They allow secondary sale sites buy all the tickets and get a cut of those.
@rbreich Nationalize a Twitter-like service where it’s a Federal crime to spread misinformation
@rbreich It's amazing how something that something that primarily effects the professional class makes news while the same problems exist in housing, agriculture, and other industries that enable people to continue breathing and barely a peep in the mainstream media.
@rbreich in aot of ways, antitrust is an example, one of few, of capitalism actually working as intended by the old school philosophers who saw it's potential for public good, as a pure mechanism for letting market forces find the right balance. Where consumers weren't seen as the enemy of capital but integral and valuable part of the equation.
@rbreich High prices and terrible customer service are calling cards off a monopoly.
@rbreich government agencies can't impose current antitrust laws against Ticketmaster?
@rbreich if ticketmaster is broken up, everyone will have to download a new app, create a new login, and sell data to a new startup company EVERY TIME they want to see a show.

@rbreich

Amen. Even a near-monoply can result in a catastrophe like the baby formula shortage. Where are today's trust-busters?

@rbreich given this is a more intimate setting, do you have any specific policy reccomendations? I feel like current laws are arbitrarily enforced by congress, and am curious if perhaps it was possible to enact regulation with specific, well-defined triggers.

@rbreich ticket master is why i don't go to shows any more. enough people take that attitude and the performers might rethink things and their arrangement with TM.
@rbreich I hated TicketMaster before it was cool.
@rbreich Agreed. However, remember what happened when they broke down AT&T / Ma Bell onto all those little Baby Bells just for them to merge again?
Remember the "too big to fail" institutions in 2008?
