@aristeon Just started using Mastodon, so I don't have much data. Then again, I didn't post much on Twitter. 😑
@dalecox your comment made me realize that I should ask those questions again later after the Twitter newcomers have settled down and engaged a bit more :)
@aristeon Oh...BTW I think you are the first person I've ever engaged with on Mastodon.
@dalecox I'm honoured, welcome! :)
@aristeon @dalecox I'm new here and trying to figure stuff out. There's a bit to learn for people like me who know zero about servers, fediverses, toots, instances, plus third party apps that might be needed to fill in missing feature gaps .
@dalecox @aristeon my comment was going to be “not yet“. Definitely ask people how long they’ve been here
@aristeon
I don’t know about *views* (as there’s no reporting of that here) but my sense is that my posts tend to get a lot more boosts here than retweets on the bird site, though I have only about a third as many followers here.
@tkinias my tweets had almost no engagement after I shifted from being East Asia -focused to Brexit and US politics. My followers were too heterogeneous and my guess is the algorithm didn't like that. Basically you had to be laser focused on a topic, and emotionally charged content performed better. It was a broken system. I want to talk about a variety of things.
@aristeon
Yeah, I have very eclectic interests as well—professional interest in lots of aspects of history and contemporary global affairs as well as teaching stuff, plus geekery around SF and FOSS. I could never be a “brand.”
@tkinias @aristeon I only ever used it for engaging with some sports people. Never really got the microblogging thing till it tried it here

@tkinias @aristeon “you had to be laser focused on a topic, and emotionally charged content performed better”

I just shuddered at the anxiety-inducing truth of these words 😖

@aristeon @tkinias I agree, Aris. Other than during the 2016 and 2020 US elections I too talked about different topics, including Australian elections, and as a result engagement was less in the #BirdCage.

Congratulations, anyway, on getting great engagement with your initial toot in this thread. It's still getting traction a day later and some wonderful soul boosted it onto my feed. 😊

@aristeon 100%. I’ve had more engagement here in two days than I’ve had on the birdapp in 6 months
@aristeon I know a lot less people, but the algorithms hide a good chunk of what you post anyway.

@Valheru @aristeon yes for sure.

Feels more like Facebook in the early days when your content was actually seen by people.
Bird app was always strangely random with what had reach or not.

@Rjdlandscapes @aristeon I know a pal of mine is posting pics from Motorcycle live, but they won't appear in my timeline because algorithms.....
@Valheru @aristeon problem when a platform grows large and your feed is massive is it gets less useful showing you everything, doesn't know what's really important, so algorithms help but they are not easy to get right and open to bias and exploitation.
Then you add on a profit / money motive because someone has to pay the bills right...?
@Rjdlandscapes @Valheru I'm not sure if I agree. Algorithms never improved my experience. For example, most of what YouTube shows me is garbage. I often search manually to discover content
@aristeon @Valheru oh I'm not saying they work! YouTube is particularly bad tbh.
@aristeon Your question is a little bit off topic - you know, the reach has no meaning in #Fediverse.
@Hiker maybe engagement would have been a better term. Anyway people are understanding what I meant.
@aristeon Maybe - but only if they have understood that numbers have no meaning in #Fediverse.
@Hiker I think they have understood what I meant.

@aristeon I have a massive account on Twitter that I use to promote liberal values and human rights. It will take years for me to again reach 90,500 people at the touch of a finger.

But the oligarchs bought it & are riding it down like Slim Pickens riding the bomb to the inevitable disintegration. #Twitter

@aristeon If anything it seems like more, since I get actual interactions.
@aristeon I had 15k followers on Twitter.
@aristeon The shape of the curve is definitely different! Reach here is less dependent on using improbable words together such as “chainsaw” and “microwave” that tended to trigger algorithmic promotion on Twitter.
@infinimatt @aristeon That's not why I'm here tho'.
@aristeon I reach FAR more people on Mastodon than I do on Twitter. It’s like Twitter was in the beginning. All it takes is good content. No trucks, mirrors and magic algorithm spells.
@aristeon oh, definitely not and it's not close. Even now after so many people moved, pretty much all my Twitter posts receive many multiples of the attention as my Mastodon posts do. Generally by even more than the ratio of followers on one site to the other
@aristeon granted, I'm cross posting so maybe that makes a difference

@aristeon No question. On the other site I was lucky to get a "like" or two, and then only if someone was tagged.

It is much more interactive friendly here.

@aristeon I believe more people are seeing my posts here than on Twitter based on all the engagement I receive from them.

Twitter certainly has a larger user base, but unless you are paying, your tweets don't seem to be seen by many. I know this because I would go to the timelines of people I followed and see many, many posts that I never saw any other way.

@aristeon I'd say the answer is "no" for counting warm bodies that read my posts. But the people who read them here are a lot more likely to be interested in them.
@aristeon Not even close. But totally expected.
@gimperita you should follow more people first.
@aristeon I'll qualify that with a 'not yet'
@Batronyx @aristeon This. Smaller engagement today, bit by this time next month, who knows?
@aristeon no but people interact with them more here.
@aristeon Twitter is like screaming into the void. The almighty algorithm hated everything I posted.
@aristeon I clicked "No" only because of the population on Twitter. However, I'm finding a little bit more engagement here on Mastodon right now.
@aristeon
I don’t know. But equally I don’t care. It’s no longer just about numbers…
@realBarryFrench it's not about numbers, it's about the quality of interaction. But to have quality of interaction, you need to be able to be seen. The algorithm made many people invisible.
@aristeon I feel like Mastodon is alpine fresh air compared to the urban pollution. There is so much noise on Twitter. And it's nice just to meet people and talk without skeevy dms or sales, bots and whatever else.

@aristeon

I have no idea. No metrics to compare.

I have a fraction of the followers here, but most of my followers there were bots or authors hoping I'd promote their work.

I get more actual engagement here, but I engage more myself so that's a factor.

Probably about the same amount of interaction

Whether I have any influence in either sphere is up for grabs :D

@aristeon or if not more reach, certainly more interaction and conversations.
@aristeon I really don’t know, but the ‘blue tick effect’ was limiting those without it to an echo chamber. I like Mastodon being more egalitarian and relaxed, maybe with quality over quantity of interactions?
@Warycat yes, that's been my experience, too :)

@aristeon really difficult to know.. Depends how you define reach, I think. Twitter surely wins it by scale of of it vs mastodon in terms of eyeballs on any post - these are the impressions. However, the average engagement rate feels higher on Mastodon. People seem to share more and less noise. For now.

May simply be there is only.onw sharing means (boost) vs 2 tier system on twitter (retweet & like)

@aristeon no but reach is not an important variable for. It’s about sharing different perspectives with human being in a respectful way. Total reach to bot is meaningless
@aristeon @beatricejess no but I don't care. As long as Elon, Donald or Christine Boutin can't be read them. 😉

@aristeon @Porpentina2017

not yet. I have 12k followers on Twitter and only 200 on Mastodon. It’s a different world. In time, perhaps.

@Objkshn @aristeon I currently have around 38k on Twitter, but that took me over five years to gain that many. I’m happy here and my posts seems to be doing significantly better here.
@Porpentina2017 @aristeon I am very much appreciating the different vibe, trying not to be a pest for existing users as I stumble my way through but liking what I stumble upon.
@aristeon no, but I'll take quality over quantity any day!
@aristeon I answered NO cause I’m only a day in 🤣🤣
@aristeon Pretty funny considering I had 1500ish followers on Twitter and have less than 30 here, but on Twitter I was tweeting into a void, no one engaged. So stopped tweeting, sort of a viscious cycle. Here at least a few people see and respond to posts so I'm digging it. Love the people here so far.
@CrabbyMcSlacker @aristeon I like how we have to challenge ourselves and it's like a scavenger hunt here to further find our community and connections. I love this idea!
