Paying out of pocket for healthcare could bankrupt you after a single unexpected event.

Don’t slip on ice. Don’t get into a car crash. Don’t have a heart attack or stroke. Don’t get cancer. Don’t get a kidney stone. Don’t get pneumonia. Don’t get appendicitis.

@drshazmamithani This is about helping American Healthcare Insurance companies expand their market.
@drshazmamithani I wish the price list for ER services could be printed in every community newspaper.
@CharRichardRSW @drshazmamithani Agree!! And I also wish we had a MSM that would actually be interested in publishing same.
@drshazmamithani and don't ever quit your employer with health insurance, no matter how evil they are or how bad they treat you. This, I believe, is what the Owners are gunning for...a workforce that is beholden to bad employers.
@drshazmamithani
and especially don't do anything that could hurt you enough to go to the hospital. In Ontario they are all beyond full.
@drshazmamithani I had a stroke 23 months ago. I had a CT scan, MRI, ECG, ambulance ride. That was just the first 3 days- plus a hospital stay. Then AHS covered neurological rehab. Then AHS covered diagnostics to find out why. Then AHS covered heart procedure to close a PFO (hole from birth for those non-med people). I was 49. I was already behind because I’m self-employed. I’d for sure be in financial despair if not for tax-paid AHS. I pay for medications myself now.

@drshazmamithani anyone know how much it will be to have a baby (without complications) in Alberta under Danielle Smith?

@DonnaBeecheerful @drshazmamithani I am an Alberta obstetrician and did the math a few years back as part of research. Numbers were approximate and average for low risk/low intervention:
Prenatal tests $800
MD pre/post natal visits $500
MD delivery $700
Midwifery course of care: $4600
Hospital stay $1500/day
Epidural $800
@fionamattatall @drshazmamithani Thank you for crunching the numbers ❤️ Had absolutely no idea.
@fionamattatall @DonnaBeecheerful @drshazmamithani I know in the US a friend had to prepay for prenatal which ran around 3k. Delivery by C-section was another 5k but she got the bonus two weeks extra off so she had a whole 8 weeks at home with her baby before going back to work. The other friend who lost her baby at 30 weeks did not get refunded her prepaid appointments and still had to pay to deliver a baby that was gone. It’s disgusting how healthcare runs in the US
@drshazmamithani Don’t have a miscarriage, don’t have a ruptured ovarian cyst.. the list goes on and on.
@drshazmamithani I can't believe it may come to this.

@drshazmamithani My grandparents and my mother lived in poverty for years because of healthcare bills before we had universal healthcare in Canada. It completely changed their lives when it was brought in and gave them at least a chance to live without scrambling to find a few coins to buy milk or eating only bread for dinner.

The idea that Albertans would so quickly just forget what it was like before is unbelievably maddening.

@drshazmamithani my understanding is that Alberta Health Services wouldn’t change, but services covered by Alberta Health Insurance would be capped at a health spending amount (ie basically everything outside a hospital setting). It’s no wonder Smith is wanting to give triage nurses the power to deny service. I am thinking the Sovereignty Act will be needed to protect AB govt from violating Canada Health Act (Universal Healthcare).
@drshazmamithani exactly. I know someone who lost their house in US after appendix rupture caused extended hospital stay. What is this premier doing to us!? #daniellemustgo
@drshazmamithani People in Alberta have no idea what is on the table at this very moment.
