I see a lot of posts about finding #Journalists on #Mastodon, and lists thereof, but few about finding #NewsOrganizations.

Is this a sign that what people really valued about the bird network was the direct access to journalists, not the feeds of the organizations themselves?

(PS: If anyone has a good list of news orgs, I'd appreciate the ability to see what other folks are doing)

@BostonAbrams yes, that’s the main reason I was on twitter.
@BostonAbrams I’m looking for links to and commentary on news stories, so I want to follow news orgs and journalists.
@Scottporch I hope you'll include my employer, @TheConversationUS among your mix.
@BostonAbrams absolutely same here!!!! I constantly searching for the news org’s I was following over there
@BostonAbrams I'm also looking for #NewsOrganizatins. Have followed The Economist and The Atlantic plus AlJazeera (unofficial bot).
@peachybrets @BostonAbrams I was missing news feeds when I got back to Mastodon a couple weeks ago so I built bots to pull them in at least until these publications get here.
This account is following the news sources I have so far and I’m open to requests/suggestions. All the accounts on newsrelay.org are bots pulling in news. @admin

@BostonAbrams I think you may be onto something with that notion.

I think MOST people want validation of their beliefs NOT information to possibly impact their beliefs.

"News" reliant on subscribers and Ads is inherently flawed especially with outlets being consolidated and contracting.

This Mastodon thing might be onto to something.

@BostonAbrams focus group of one: I want people, not orgs or reposted RSS feeds. I haven’t nailed the strategy yet, but it’s oozing that direction.
@BostonAbrams I think that’s a general feature of Twitter (and social media) beyond journalism: people prefer to engage with other people over brands. A news organization might be useful to follow, but they won’t respond to you or provide you additional insights.
@BostonAbrams This post has a list in google docs. I’m hoping to see more journalists open accounts the next few weeks. #TwitterExodus https://indieweb.social/@alwirtes/109376240194970512

Hey @[email protected], @tchambers maintains a great list of journalists on #mastodon. it would be great to see our #colorado #journalists represented. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13No4yxY-oFrN8PigC2jBWXreFCHWwVRTftwP6HcREtA/edit#gid=1320898902

@GTinNC My point exactly - it’s journalists, not the organizations that employ them, edit them, give many of them credibility and aggregate their work
@BostonAbrams I just silenced https://newsrelay.org/public/local and https://redstateliberal.social/public/local on my private instance because they have a firehose of news organization stuff and that's not what I'm personally looking for, but others might appreciate
Mastodon

The social network of the future: No ads, no corporate surveillance, ethical design, and decentralization! Own your data with Mastodon!

Mastodon hosted on newsrelay.org
@BostonAbrams Probably. I don’t think news organizations were/are exempt from the endless mocking of Brands that try and use the internet, I think most people only want to talk to people on their social media. If I wanted a news feed I’d use RSS 🤷‍♂️

@BostonAbrams answering your question: yes, very much so.

My approach:
News networks for Breaking News.
Then I seek out journos I trust for thoughtful take on the news, which takes a little longer to appear.
I curate my own lists for this.

@BostonAbrams as for publications, here's a list of verified ones I'm following thus far (and have a list, but they don't seem to be publicly visible like on the olde site)

@thenation @proteanmag @themitpress @sfchronicle @ProPublica
@themarkup @UnicornRiot @Freedom_Press @ajlisteningpost

The list betrays my politics a little, but I'd love to know of other publications on here already

@00Aaron Thank you! I’ll add my little pub to your list, @TheConversationUS, and a couple of local sites like @msfreepress and @yubanet

@BostonAbrams @TheConversationUS @msfreepress @yubanet

Nice, thanks! I was glad to see The Conversation on here and am checking out the others

@BostonAbrams Not necessarily. I follow journalists I respect because I’m interested in their take on events; I follow news organizations…for the news. That’s how I started out on twitter and it seemed the best way to acclimate to Mastodon. So far; so good.
@BostonAbrams I suspect it's more that people recognise that while individual journalists may have set up profiles it's likely that news orgs have yet to do so because of bureaucratic inertia. We've set up a profile though! https://mastodon.social/@decrypt
@BostonAbrams
Wait. I am also interested in news orgs: AP, Reuters, NYT, WaPo, freep, Boston Globe, ABCNBCCBS, etc
@BostonAbrams I haven’t seen many news orgs here yet. It’ll happen.
@Leslieks I know. I’m just feeling weird about being early (although, tbh, I was early in the bird site, too)
@BostonAbrams until my news sites and journalists I follow move over, this won’t be my only SM.
@BostonAbrams But I believe they will move over. He’s trashing that space over there.
