I really like the favorite/boost/bookmark distinctions. I also like the fact that here you have to go back to the original post to talk--my brain says lovechild of Twitter and Pillowfort. Also, accountability, woohoo!

So. In my view.

Favorite: HEY YOU this was a COOL THING.

Boost: HEY EVERYONE this was a COOL THING.

Bookmark: HEY ME don't forget about this COOL THING.

Reply: OMG WHAT A COOL THING can we TALK about it?

@tryslora That's how I use the Favorite function too! A sort of respectful nod to say "I saw this and appreciated it".
@twotone Yes, exactly! Like "HI! you are seen and this is cool" and I really like that? And I actually love that I can't see who else favorited a thing because it means for every post I feel like if I really like it I HAVE to say something because maybe no one else did and the poster deserves to know someone thought it was interesting.
@tryslora I used to be frustrated that I couldn't see the numbers of likes and comments on a post, but now I feel like the lack of numbers actually encourages me to reach out and interact with people instead of just passively scrolling through content.

@twotone YES YES THIS. I still do a lot of passive scrolling (I get overwhelmed easily--slow mode has saved my ADHD arse many times already) but it reminds me to think about what I'm seeing and do something.

I think I've boosted more posts here in the last week than I RTed on the birb site in ages.

@tryslora Perfectly delineated - and I've done all four things with this fine post! Thanks.
@tryslora that’s how I’ve come to understand it, too!
@tryslora how do I bookmark. Sorry I’m new.
@Jujabee It's the little icon to the right of the star. When you click that, it gets added to your bookmarks which are listed on your getting started page (the one that opens from the three bars on the far left at the top of your far left panel). I've only just discovered them recently myself, and they are great for my goldfish brain!
@tryslora @Jujabee I wonder why I don’t have that option.
@tryslora The one thing I miss though is being able to comment upon a retweet. I prefer to add something. It's an old improv habit.
@tryslora also as far as I can tell, you can easily get a list of things you’ve favorited, but not a list of things you’ve boosted?
@fields from what I’ve seen so far yeah. But if you look at something you can see if you already boosted it so you don’t repeat if you don’t want to.
@tryslora how do you bookmark something? I haven't found that option yet
@Ju_Nonimous @tryslora I think I’ve figured out that the bookmark tab only shows up when you are in your own “instance” tribe, community, can’t bookmark from the general mastodon site. Right someone?
@Vbelle @Ju_Nonimous I have to admit, I don't know that, because I pretty much am in my instance, viewing the home/local/federated and I haven't had issues bookmarking in any of the timelines. But I don't really go to other servers directly; I just haven't had time.

@tryslora

Good summary. I'd add one more thing:

Follow: HEY MAKER and PROPAGATOR of COOL THINGS, I want to see more COOL THINGS from you.

@tryslora
Now I get it - thank you! 👍
@tryslora I think those are good & helpful distinctions of the different interaction methods. 👍
@tryslora Loved it. Just wanted to say that this toot deserved all four ⭐️♻️ 🔖 💬
@tryslora How do you bookmark something??
@tryslora I don’t see the bookmark function. (Sorry, I’m new around here.)

@ReadingJennie I don't know if it's an instance thing? When I look at a Toot, I see the bookmark icon directly to the right of the favorite icon at the bottom (mine goes reply, boost, favorite, bookmark, dots/menu).

I should admit, I'm also relatively new here. I think it's been a week now.

@tryslora Hmm, mine is the same but missing the bookmark. I’ll keep trying. Good for my old brain to try new things. Thanks!
@tryslora And your replies stay kind of close to the point you hit the reply button in the reply tread.
@tryslora Thanks for explaining this -- and for pointing out the Bookmark, which I had actually not noticed/figured out...
@tryslora This is very useful. Thank you for sharing. We are all here just figuring this out. Together.
@tryslora Ok I’ve just learned about the bookmark button.
@dataless I love the bookmark button and have already lost posts I wish I had used it on. I am going to employ it more going forward! I have determined my favorites are too long a list... bookmark for the short list!
@tryslora thank you this is so helpful! It’s confusing that it says “x reblogs” for how many boosts, but otherwise I like these distinctions too.

@tryslora

I use Favorites like a bookmark. If it is noteworthy enough for me to remember, the crearor should get to know it, too.

@MaxGuthier If I bookmark a thing, I favorite it too, usually, because yes, I totally want the creator to know I liked it.

But I am favoriting a lot of things, so that list is looooong, so I'm using bookmarks for the things I know I need/want to refer back to so it's a shorter list. Mostly a nice way to curate the fire hose in my head!

@tryslora

Favorited, Boosted, Bookmarked, then Replied, now Edited, & finally Copied link to post & Pasted.

ps:
Edit: It really works!
Copy post to link & Paste: Like a QT, but not really!

@tryslora

I did not realise bookmarks existed! Thanks for pointing them out to me. The distinction between that and favourites is very useful.

@tryslora
But I find even after a few weeks here, that the list is missing one.

HEY FRIENDS (followers) I want to show you all a COOL THING and TALK about it. Don’t worry, I’ll start.

@tryslora I just got here and this is incredibly helpful!
@tryslora
Thank you for the concise explanation.
Unfortunately the iOS apps don't have Bookmark support nor do they have the Lists option.
For many newbies, like myself, it gives a frustratingly limited view of how the system works and what it offers...

@tryslora I saw someone complain that "liking does nothing"

That's what I expect liking to do! Just tell you that I liked it

@tryslora

I don't know what to say. I just wanted to reply.

@tryslora nice post. Couldn't agree more. I can't even think about the bird site anymore. I'm liking it here. Such a calm and laid back vibe.
@tryslora nice way of explaining it. Thanks from a Mastodon newbie.
@tryslora Now if only there was an easy way to filter through the bookmarks...

@tryslora Just a little added nuance:

Boost + Favorite: Super cool, everyone should see this.
Boost sans Favorite: Everyone should see this, but not necessarily cool.
