I love George Takei and I wish him the best always, but I don't need to recreate Twitter here. I'm good. I'm not looking to follow people who are building an audience here. I'm looking to connect with people I can build a community with. I'm going to do what I can to not fall into the trap of the audience/celebrity relationship on this site.
That said, I also follow Elvira, but that's because I've been in love with her since I was eight
@joehumphrey Heh! Me too! Elvira rocks!
@joehumphrey for some people, celebrity is thier side hustle. Being a human is their main gig.
@joehumphrey Oh. Does that mean you will respond to and engage in a dialogue with Internet LionBurrs?
@LeoBurr
I'm sorry I don't know what you're talking about
@joehumphrey I’ll take your response as an affirmative. 🐻👍🏾
@LeoBurr
Is this like a Bear thing?
@joehumphrey It’s totally like a bear thing, man. 🐻👍🏾
@LeoBurr
Fair enough! I'm happy to interact with anyone who is kind and respectful. I just want everyone to have a good time!
@joehumphrey I try to be kind and respectful and run a Mastodon instance of diverse folks, many of whom are tech heads and gamers. Plenty of whom are old enough to have played games you worked on, on the Atari ST and Amiga when they first came out. 🐻👍🏾
@LeoBurr
Rock and roll. I had an Amiga 500 back in the day. Played the hell out of some Carmen San Diego
@joehumphrey I had an Atari 1040 ST. Later an Amiga 4000. Oh, the memories. Of swapping floppy disks…
@LeoBurr I used to ride my bike to the library with floppy disks in my backpack to write my first screenplays, listening to my discman. More innocent times
@joehumphrey @mbr Our library rented Nintendo “tapes” with please rewind” stickers on them. 🐻👍🏾
@joehumphrey “How many disks will the new Sierra On-Line game take? Will they all work?” Kids today don’t know the struggle… ;)
@joehumphrey That's my aim on Mastodon as well. I'd like to be enriched by other's lives as well as help enrich their's.
@joehumphrey Yes. I want an alternative to Twitter, not the same thing, including both culture and functionality.

@joehumphrey well then maybe you shouldn't be following a mega-star like me.

#PardonMyGloriousShine #JustMegaCelebrityProblems

@cjbooker

Ha!
I should clarify that I'm not even against following successful or famous people. I just don't want to be an audience member here

@joehumphrey Mastodon is a federated platform. There'll be an instance for famous people to engage with followers, just as there'll be an instance for casual connection.

This isn't one site. Nor can you "ruin" or "Twitter-fy" it. An individual instance, maybe. But not an entire, decentralized platform, where admins are free to voluntarily associate or block off instances.

@joehumphrey Same as on the bird, I'm doing a bit of both. But I agree, this isn't twitter nor do most folks want it to be twitter.
@joehumphrey Gotta say that I agree with you on this point. I mean, it's nice that some of our more rational-minded celebs are making their presence known here (can the rest be far behind, though 😨?). I'd much rather be a part of a creative, vital, and (yes) useful online community that inspires and fosters intelligent discussion amongst folks who are NOT celebrities. Also, yes -- an exception must be made for Elvira. Always 🦇 .
@WillderBeast There are definitely creative people who are famous that I would follow here, because I want to know what they're up to. Mike Flannagan, GDT, Stephen King... but honestly, I don't really have the interest in participating in being one of tens of thousands of people yelling into the wind
@joehumphrey Oh, the minute Bernard Cornwell shows up here, I'll be following him 😂
@joehumphrey Truth be told, my particular field -- paleontological/archeological documentaries -- sports very few celebrities, per se. So when I mention that I'm a bit more fascinated by those unsung folks working in the trenches, I'm being rather literal ⛏️ 🤣😂

@joehumphrey Yeah... I added him... And one day after un-added him lol. Felt too much like birdsite. He's a really cool guy, but I have this feeling his PR team manages his account.

Different from Neil Gaiman (another cool guy, too). Neil shitposts personal things in birdsite, tumblr and here.

@joehumphrey I noticed sometimes someone I follow retoot some Takey's things... and for me it's okay to see his posts from times to times, but not ALL posts, EVERY time.
@captbarba79 I’m fine with that too. Nothing against the guy, I just don’t need to follow him
@captbarba79 that’s exactly what I mean! Neil is connecting with people, not building an audience
