A couple of things I've learned recently about norms here:
CW is great for a lot of topics, not just NSFW or violence. Think of it like a "headline" or "subject line" for your post and folks can choose to look at it or not. Use them often.
Policing CWs, especially by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) member is NOT okay.
alt-text for photos and pics is incredibly useful and important for accessibility. Try to get in the habit of a quick description when you post a pic.

Hashtags are great and should also be used liberally -that's how we find stuff we're interested in, across the fediverse. HOWEVER, Hashtags [can be difficult for people with visual impairment or ND people] so please use them [most of them] at the end of your post, in a hashtag block, not scattered throughout. One or two are okay.
Edited to add: CamelCase is more important for screenreaders!

Just to follow up on this - apparently, it's okay to have a few hashtags inline, just not a bunch of them; not just for screenreaders, but also for sighted folks who might have difficulty with visual clutter. So, yeah, like most things, it's more nuanced than the "just don't do it" announcement, I made last week as a newbie. My apologies.

Please DO use #CamelCase though in your hashtags. That makes a huge difference.

@annaraven I love:

1) That meaningful discord was had here for to to come to this co conclusion.
2) That you followed up with an update.

As an aside, if you encouraged lots of people to put hashtags at the end of their posts, thatโ€™s not actually a problem. So at least this isnโ€™t going to cause any issues for people.

@annaraven I hate posts full of hashtags anyway. My first thought is what are you trying to sell me.
Thanks. Please do check out my update tho.
Thanks for the boost. Please read and boost the update tho.
@annaraven thanks. I have been doing it wrong.

@annaraven Good to know.
I read something abou capitalising the first letter of each word to help with screen readers.

Did not know the impact that having them among the text would have.

Thanks.

@annaraven I edited a post after reading this, and it made it easier to read visually too.
@annaraven great advice, thanks! I had no idea
@annaraven Whoa! I had no idea. Thanks for the tip!
also, if you do a multi-word hashtagwithnocaps, screenreaders think it's all one word and gibberish. but if you do your hashtagsWithCapsForEachWord then screenreaders will read each capitalized word as a new word so it's not gibberish <3
@annaraven
@annaraven Thanks for the info - very good to know!
@annaraven Thank you for the information. Seems I learn something new every time Iโ€™m here!
@annaraven I had no idea - thank you for sharing this info, I will do my best to remember
@annaraven Kia ora from Aotearoa NZ, and appreciate that information, will try to remember to do that.
@annaraven Thank you for explaining this.

@annaraven

I appreciate your advice, I have no idea about it, but at the same time, we should open issues at screenreader software apps to interpret right hashtags. It doesn't seem a very difficult task.

#screenreader #software #hashtags

@annaraven Good to know. Thank you.
@annaraven and screen readers could get better tooโ€ฆ Iโ€™m sure some of them are figuring out how to navigate that better. I know itโ€™s not 100% trivial as some people just stick hashtags in front of normal words.
@annaraven Eek, I did not realise that. Thanks for sharing.
@annaraven Thank you for this explanation, I will put hashtags at the end from now on.

@annaraven oh I didnโ€™t know that. I did know about camel-casing/Pascal-casing them though. Which Iโ€™dโ€™ve thought would solve the problem youโ€™re describing.

#camelCase #PascalCase #hashtags

@annaraven I read a thread from a screen reader user who said itโ€™s fine to put them within body of text - the most important thing is to capitalise separate words- as youโ€™ve done.
@annaraven This is appreciated advice.
@annaraven oh no, I scatter them throughout. I had no idea. Thank you!
@annaraven Thank you! I didn't know that.
@annaraven TIL... thanks for the awareness post!
@annaraven that is really useful, I didnโ€™t know they messed with screenreaders!
@annaraven this is really helpful. Thank you!
@annaraven Thanks for that tip, it's really helpful to know!
@annaraven thank you. I did not know this.
@annaraven Thank you! I usually do, but I learned something!

@annaraven Wow, I had not thought about that - thanks for bringing it to our attention!

This fits into my mantra of "try to be a little kinder every day" - thanks!

@ggainey Please check out my update tho.
@annaraven Ah - great followup, thank you! It's good to be reminded that "everything has nuance", and the discussion is teaching me even more.
@annaraven Thank you for this! I didn't know!
@CorryHinckley Please do check out my update tho.
@annaraven Good to know. Thanks for the info!
@Jo2022 Please do read my update tho
@annaraven thank you for pointing this out. I will change my hashtage usage
@YasminGalaxygir Please check out my followup tho.
@annaraven oops, thanks for that, but I like my introduction so much
@annaraven Thanks a lot for the insight! I'll try to add this tip for our instance here.
