Those of us migrating from #Twitter (like me) should read this article. I've been here a few days, and have already come to the realization that #Mastodon is an entirely different ecosystem. The worst we can do is treat it as Twitter 2.0.

This is a special community worth preserving. Some of the features that might strike the Twitter user as archaic were designed purposely to protect people over here. Let's try to respect the existing culture, not change it. 👇

Home invasion - Mastodon's Eternal September begins

The fediverse is dealing with a huge wave of Twitter people bringing toxic ideas with them.

Somebody rightly pointed out that Mastodon is many cultures - which is true. I don't have an edit button, but I hope my meaning is understood despite my phrasing, above.
@DrLindseyFitzharris Actually you should have an edit-Button. That's one of the beauties of Mastodon. It is called "Delete & re-draft". 😉
@risk Hmmm... maybe because I'm using it on my laptop? I'll look into it. An edit button would be brilliant!
@DrLindseyFitzharris Does that help?
@risk Oh yes - so if I delete and redraft, do the comments and reblogs disappear? It's already been shared a lot.
@DrLindseyFitzharris @risk they do. The real edit button is in Mastodon V.4, which is the latest version only some servers are running.
@john @DrLindseyFitzharris Good to know. I missed that when I read the announced changes. 🙄
@DrLindseyFitzharris As far as I know, that's right. So for now I would recommend to leave the post as it is. 😉
@DrLindseyFitzharris An edit button is coming in v4 which is currently in public testing at the moment at mastodon.online and mastodon.social. It's up to server admins when they update, if they take the 'beta' version or if they wait for the full stable release.
@DrLindseyFitzharris thanks for this. I am just hanging around the fringes of the house party trying to figure out how best to interact 🙃. It might take a little while.
@huxley @DrLindseyFitzharris same. Now I feel bad for intruding.
@jacjac @DrLindseyFitzharris hey, I don't think anyone wants us to feel bad, just to be sensitive to the existing culture(s). I am finding it fascinating learning about how things are done here, just like I would if I had just moved to another company or country.
@huxley @DrLindseyFitzharris 100% agree. I think that's just my social anxiety playing up!

@DrLindseyFitzharris I know people are seeing this as a Twitter replacement, and to be fair I think we all do - a bit, to start with.

Might be worth everyone reading the very obvious https://mastodon.help/ to get a feel for why it's social media as it should be.

It's not a copy of something commerical that preys on your emotional connections to reduce & sell that interaction for profit.

Technically it's a bit like email so there may be spam but its controllable by each and all of us.

Mastodon Help - Guide

A thorough introduction to Mastodon

@DrLindseyFitzharris Thanks for pointing this out. I too am a member of the new influx, so it's good to see what environment we are coming into, and how we can respect that :)
@DrLindseyFitzharris The best articulation/explainer I've read on the topic this week
@DrLindseyFitzharris thank you for writing this - it needs to be said and understood by many of us
@Kategl I didn't write the article linked in the post, but I certainly learned a lot from it. And am continuing to learn a lot from old-school Mastodon people over here!
@DrLindseyFitzharris I appreciate your sharing it
@DrLindseyFitzharris Amen. I thought the article was great and helped me to reflect on what I want from here and it's definitely not #Twitter 2.0

@DrLindseyFitzharris

Great read. I get why it might feel intrusive. A sign of its success.

The ability to filter & be more selective than the birdsite means you can keep the content select.

A decentralised model means one person can't control the whole thing.

That has to be good?

As a birdsite user since 2007 I'll do my best to make sure my mastodon feed doesn't get toxic, because that's the reason I've joined i.e. to not get sucked in so easily.

I gave up FB for the same reason

@DrLindseyFitzharris thank you for the tip. Has made things a little clearer for me 😊
@DrLindseyFitzharris I expect M. to change. It seemingly was built/designed small scale. Excellent for small groups on underfunded small servers. These are being overwhelmed by ex twitters. System can´t cope easily with the millions on their way. I expect several new instances to be set up, funded and with It capacity to cope with the ex twits. the ""historic" M continues under the radar..
@DrLindseyFitzharris My instance charges a subscription. Cheaper than Musk but perhaps a sign of the future. Its just a one man band so needs regular income rather than rely on haphazard donations. But will demand from new users overload his IT system?
@stevegreen My server doesn't charge a subscription but I did donate to the Patreon page to support the efforts going on right now!
@DrLindseyFitzharris Thanks for sharing, very helpful article!
@DrLindseyFitzharris thank you!
This really is a Must-Read for newcomers like me.
@DrLindseyFitzharris
"murmuration of tweeters"
I love it
Also, guilty.
@DrLindseyFitzharris yes! Read this earlier today and passed it along.

@DrLindseyFitzharris to be fair, these are common complaints for every social media system. The Eternal September is chaos and, for the optimistic, opportunity.

The perception of switch costs between Twitter and Mastodon changed after the Musk takeover, and suddenly folks had time to try out something new.

@DrLindseyFitzharris Agree and posted something similar after I quickly realized the differences here on my first day. Just follow the norms and appreciate they are there for good reasons.
@DrLindseyFitzharris thanks a lot for this. It feels very much written from the heart. I started here in April, have not followed anyone nor neen followed. I want to inderstand this platform first, like I would read a manual of a tool before hurting muself or others. Still I did not truly understand how things work tbh. Your artcles was very helpful in this. 🙏🏾
@DrLindseyFitzharris
Thank you for sharing this article. Food for thought....
@DrLindseyFitzharris
Thank you for posting the "Home Invasion" link. It was precisely the cultural introduction that I needed.
@DrLindseyFitzharris Absolutely. I'm sitting back and watching more now to make sure I catch the vibe here. The birdsite is more than a bit toxic and it's also a nice breath of fresh air to be here. I need to retrain my social media brain.
@DrLindseyFitzharris This so reminds me of swimming in Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi in the late 80s and then they film The Beach...
@DrLindseyFitzharris Wow. Agree. A must-read for #TwitterMigration folks on the culture shock some FediVets are feeling.
@DrLindseyFitzharris wonderful piece. Thank you.
@DrLindseyFitzharris Not sure I like/agree with the V2 of the #birdsite. In my mind, that place belongs to wherever Atlantis went.
@DrLindseyFitzharris I’ve def getting vibes of my early dial-up bulletin board (#BBSes) here. I hope the original crew will be patient with us as we ramp up. :)

@DrLindseyFitzharris great article about what happens when people start using that thing you want them to use.

The subway example is classic.

On the bright side they knew it (mass transit) was an option vs. driving drunk — and used it.

@Gargron posts about the exciting growth make me think he’s happy we know about it — and are using it.

I’m hopeful the bad actors stay with their new found god and leave us willing to work within the @Mastodon ecosystem alone.

@DrLindseyFitzharris It’s really interesting; I’m bouncing back & forth between MASTO & birdsite, & I realize that birdsite gives me an INSTANT HIT of adrenaline, whereas MASTO requires my time, patience & attention.

MASTO is certainly a healthier place & I will ween myself off the adrenaline hit of the birdsite eventually! I catch myself thinking, before I click that tab, “Do I really want to feel angry?”

@DrLindseyFitzharris Or, TikTok wasn’t the same as Instagram, now was it? Should it have been? Did you DEMAND that it so become? #same
