For all #mastodon bases itself on inclusivity and acceptance (wonderful) we, here please, need to accept that everyone in Wales doesn't speak Welsh - and may speak a number of Diasporan/other languages so that shouldn't be penalised - so let's be truely inclusive and not use #Defaidodon and other untranslatable terms without clarity #wales

@ink this one's a little tricky to reply to.... we service dozens and dozens of languages here. You'll run into a lot of #French and #German hashtags for sure.

Being part of a global community means sometimes not immediately knowing what's being said.

And very, very specifically, #Welsh is highly encouraged here. Welsh not being immediately understood is one of the core reasons we are online.

If you see anything in any language that needs explaining, please feel free to ask 👍 😃

@jaz just ask the English/Welsh hashtags are used side-by-side. The photo shows the issue - I'm way too busy to be googling everything...and as you can see from the pic, it's not helpful.

@ink we have a large number of Spanish, French, Arabic and Portuguese speakers on the server. In the same fashion that I will not be asking them to translate everything they tag, I will similarly not ask the Welsh-conversant to do so.

The founding principle of setting up this service is to foster the welcoming of Welsh, or English, or both being used without reproach.

Asking anyone, of any language, to instead accommodate someone else's language is the antithesis of our raison d'etre.

We simply do not tell people what language to post or tag in. That would be colonial (if requesting English, say) and/or culturally inappropriate.

I do appreciate you taking the time to ask, and hopefully understand our position.

@ink @jaz Google doesn't translate it because it's not a Welsh word - it's a composite of the Welsh word "defaid" meaning "sheep" and "odon", presumably from "Mastodon".

@cadachllestri thank you. Assuming it was a Welsh word rather than a linguahybrid is an easy hole to fall into

@ink Ah, that I can't help you with. Is that Google? I think Google might be hiccuping on a nonsense word, there are a lot of hashtags with "stodon" or "odon" being added, none of them will make sense to a translation service.

#Mapstodon #Histodon #Twexodus #Tootorial #rtistry are all portmanteaus or plays on words that Google translate will not comprehend but will be "in" with the relevant crowd, there's not much we can do about that.

@niwlenster the confusion is sorted thanks. Google translate and linguistic hybrids between two languages not a reason for disharmony. And if I choose to toot (this is Mastodon) in my minor languages I don't expect to be understood by you specifically - you are not my intended audience.
