My latest article for Inquirer.net is now up and I take a look at map projections, and specifically at the Mercator projection popularly used by mapping services such as Google Maps. GIS professionals in particular might remember EPSG:900913 from the late 2000s. 🗺️

Just rolled the latest release tar balls for Maps (51.alpha) and libshumate (1.7.alpha) for the GNOME 51 development cycle

And Maps 50.2, and libshumate 1.6.2 and 1.5.4
for the stable branches

Including, among others, the offline map download support and public transit departure boards for Maps 51.alpha and improvements to vector map sources for libshumate which will enable some nice refactorings in how build the vector map style later on, among other changes

#GIS folks, (maybe #CAD too) how do you draw this kind of shape with guaranteed perfectly tangent lines and only 4 vertices?

I've been trying different things for 3-4 years on and off and the closest I've come is 5 vertices, ESRI leaves a spare vertex in there for some reason and so I don't know which one I delete will ruin the tangent

This is not a need, it's a mental chalenge
