Might I suggest that Twitter refugees include their generalized location in bios? The process of reestablishing a network will result in making new connections and you may not always know someone's location.

More importantly, this place is far less American-centric than Twitter, and having to ID as American (if you are) might remind you that the US is not the entire world.

@emptywheel good suggestion. Done!

@becka @emptywheel
Also done!

(And this becomes my first post here!)

@emptywheel There can be good reasons to avoid it though.

Options include using CW "uspol" for things which are USA-specific.

@nemobis I realize people don't include personal details for good reason. But for most Americans, IDing as such won't pinpoint location.
@emptywheel
Living in Germany I'm surprised at the number of Germans who casually assume that all Americans know each other.
@nemobis
@samweingamgee @emptywheel @nemobis There's a line from Casablanca that I'm failing to find in which two of the people waiting on exit visas discuss where in the US they're going. One says 'New York, America'; the other says 'Chicago, America - we'll be neighbours!'
@emptywheel that's a good idea. Also, I don't know about you, but because I follow a fairly large number on the bird site, some people I "know" (recognize/occasionally interact with) there haven't carried over their avi's and it messes me up. "Is that the hysterical unshaven western movie cowboy pen tester guy or the green chicken math guru person?"
@kennwhite yup. I made that request yesterday. I’m following people as they follow me, hoping others will find follows thru me. But I’m scanning quickly, looking for familiar “faces.”
@emptywheel Tokyo, but I grew up in Grand Rapids just like you.
@Tenkawa Oh, I moved there. I came with all the others who discovered the city in the 2010s.
@emptywheel I had no idea it was so popular, having left in 1974. I had a 10-room house on Dunham that I bought for $14,300 and sold for a bit more.
@Tenkawa We lived in Cherry Hill -- in what I understand was a wildly gentrified neighborhood by the time we arrived.
@emptywheel I'm sure it was. When I was working on the (failed) McGovern campaign, I had a sit-on-the-floor lunch in that area with Jane Fonda, at some friends' apartment.

@emptywheel if u want your profile to be more discoverable, add hashtags to your bio.

And hashtag your posts too.

@goofrider Will do that when I figure out what hashtags people actually use.

@emptywheel Folksonomy is organic so just start your own. You have big enough a following to make something stick.

You can always change them or add more later if you come across something more appropriate.

@goofrider We'll see how those work.

Still trying to find the best Black Hole picture to go with my 2nd grade class picture.

@emptywheel wait sorry I just tried it and looks like bio isn't searchable 🥲 at least not on my server. I've seen ppl adding hashtags in bio so I assumed it's searchable.

Probably still helps telling ppl who you are tho. Fwiw I've also seen ppl use #politics #law #lawfedi in their bios.

@goofrider Well, we'll see. That may actually be something in the new roll-out.

@emptywheel Whaaaat? You mean we’re NOT the center of the UNIVERSE! 🙄

Good idea. Editing my bio.

@emptywheel Plus, a giant corporation isn't going to hoover up and monetize your location data.

@darius I was reading in the ActivityPub spec and was fascinated by the Arrive activity type. Could it be used for this purpose?

@irwin @emptywheel no idea! possibly! (uhhh remember Dopplr??)
@emptywheel Convenient as it is to refer ourselves that way—United Statesian?—nor are we all of America.
@emptywheel
I kind of did...reference to Estimated Prophet by the Grateful Dead. "California...I'll be knocking on your golden door."
@emptywheel
Excellent suggestion for my ~50 real followers lol.
Stupid question tho. Why does my @ say mstdn.social and yours mastodon.social? Are they 2 different servers? Do I put the @mstdn in or did I mess that up?
@emptywheel I added a Location tag in my metadata. And thanks for the reminder.
@emptywheel I think that is a splendid idea. Even on twit I never knew where in the world people were located. I just put put my location on my bio. Thanks for the reminder.
@emptywheel Kia ora or hello from Aotearoa NZ, that's a great idea, but might I also please suggest that if we refrain from using the term 'refugee' this will show respect and compassion to real refugees who have lost their family, home, job, identity, culture, citizenship and more... not just decided to move social media accounts. Namaste
@emptywheel good idea. Still in NE US
@emptywheel I am told Mastadon will be a safe workable site if T. Rump decides to go after Blue Sky.
