I just saw that an Irish journalist got booted off Mastadon. This is the type of conflict that drives the emotionally exciting narrative experience of using social media. BUT.. do we go feral and deranged about it here? Or will we use our twitter for that? Is Mastadon the office and Twitter is the smoking shed?
I can already see. The feral stuff about this is on twitter. The emotions are already overshadowing the topic. The points based performative combat is there. I don’t think this place rewards that behaviour
And for my own self reflection and personal growth. I do not GIVE A FUCK about a journalists gripes around their suspension. It’s boring. My curiosity is around the theatre of the hostile discourse. The thrilling spectacle of a fight after school and all the horrible feelings that go with it. The self hatred from enjoying it.

@blindboyboatclub it's a good thing to be reflective on, how we react to it, how it makes us feel, is there a reason behind those feelings?

What Terry Pratchett called second thoughts or even the thoughts about the second thoughts. Metacognition as the basis of #empathy

@Lamhfada yes, Secondary emotions that’s called in psychology.

@blindboyboatclub as much as i prefer the fediverse to twitter, it's also important to not get too starry-eyed about the platform

there's been a constant pattern over the past few years of black, indigenous, and users of colour being targeted for harassment

not just by "right wing" trolls, but by white "leftists" who don't like their biases and prejudices being challenged because they want to be left to have fun in the playground

@blindboyboatclub agree. I've been flicking back and forth between Mastodon and work all morning; if I'd done that on Twitter I'd be in a rage fuelled heap of anxiety and a mess for the rest of the day.
@sineadredmond ooh that’s a lovely observation
@blindboyboatclub to add to that a bit more, I'm trying to actively set aside birdapp learned behaviours, like a) caring about my follower count and b) thinking my follow count needs to be higher than my follower count. Like it's okay to miss some of the things we took part in and in part made happen over there but it also rewarded the most self hating parts of my psyche, who really don't need any encouragement.
@blindboyboatclub aargh, follower count higher than my follow count!
@sineadredmond @blindboyboatclub So true, thanks Sinead.
I am finding its like a new diet or exercise regime. I know its better, I am happier, but any excuse can pull me back to the couch of drama, breaking news and clickbait!
@noinini @blindboyboatclub yeah I occasionally do look back in, nearly by accident, but I find I see things being advertised to me before anything I actually want to see and it immediately puts me off again! Still, it's hard to let go of the familiar isn't it?
@sineadredmond @noinini @blindboyboatclub I find myself having to consciously not dual-post 🫤like if I post something here I kinda want to tweet it as well but that would be like giving up smokes, eating sweets instead and adding few extra pounds, but then starting smoking again anyway 😭

@blindboyboatclub To be that game metaphor guy again, maybe this place is a bit more Animal Crossing than World of Warcraft?

*imagines some cute animals sending angry journalists away from their bucolic islands in a warm hearted inversion of The Island of Dr Moreau*

@blindboyboatclub Booted off Mastodon, or just off a particular instance.
(I'm only just appreciating myself that there's a difference.)

@robonabike @blindboyboatclub Can I ask - was it booted off mastodon or suspended from one instance?
I'm not trying to debate a particular instance, just wondering if 'booted off Mastodon' is Tw style fighting talk maybe?

The conversation I saw was pretty mild, clearly misunderstood and then discussed on Tw as personal attack on a whole profession. You may be aware of a whole 'nother event though, so there's that!!

@blindboyboatclub I've seen discussions about it, there seems to be a lot of knee-jerk reactions going on and limited understanding of what this platform is (ie.e not the Lidl centre-aisle Twitter, as most people complaining about it seem to think)
@philipoconnor @blindboyboatclub who got booted off?
@carlyk @blindboyboatclub I can't remember the person's name, it's not someone I follow on there but I think she works for the Irish Times. Some dispute with the Irish Mastodon site admin, I believe.
@blindboyboatclub
@notthertenews seems like the metaphorical metaphor picket fence gauntlet has been thrown down
@blindboyboatclub I think she was suspended for a few hours rather than booted altogether in fairness. Twitter is the smoking shed the woodwork teacher is one naggin of whisky short of taking a can of petrol and a Zippo to

@blindboyboatclub

Remain calm
One gets booted off a server, not the entire Mastodon ecosystem.

If Mastodon takes off, It will make sense for organisations like newspapers to run their own Masatodon instances where they will have editorial control.

The federation model means the rest of us get to see their stuff only if we want to, not because of shareholder value or 'eyeballs'

@blindboyboatclub I hate the part of my brain that thinks “ooh, bit of conflict with a journalist, wonder what that’s about…” Pure pavlovian twitter behaviour right there.
@blindboyboatclub Personally, I'd prefer a mastodon.ie without the likes of Reilly, Chambers and chief west brit correspondent Hugh O'Connell linking their government propaganda but that's just me and that's why I blocked the ones I've found so far.

@blindboyboatclub Nah I they weren't booted off Mastodon. They were booted off an instance because they didn't seem to think the rules should apply to them and didn't like this being highlighted to them (May seem harsh but as they work for an organisation which is under boycott by trans writers because of its institutional transphobia... ).

They can always join another instance or create their own mastadon instance.

@blindboyboatclub Mastodon is in a normal group process, some people are just forming, there will be the inevitable storming phase, and some will feel entitled to storm, because that's what happens on Twitter.Then there's the norming, it's fairly obvious what people want as norms already so stormers are going to storm and then complain
