I just saw that an Irish journalist got booted off Mastadon. This is the type of conflict that drives the emotionally exciting narrative experience of using social media. BUT.. do we go feral and deranged about it here? Or will we use our twitter for that? Is Mastadon the office and Twitter is the smoking shed?
I can already see. The feral stuff about this is on twitter. The emotions are already overshadowing the topic. The points based performative combat is there. I don’t think this place rewards that behaviour
@blindboyboatclub agree. I've been flicking back and forth between Mastodon and work all morning; if I'd done that on Twitter I'd be in a rage fuelled heap of anxiety and a mess for the rest of the day.
@sineadredmond ooh that’s a lovely observation
@blindboyboatclub to add to that a bit more, I'm trying to actively set aside birdapp learned behaviours, like a) caring about my follower count and b) thinking my follow count needs to be higher than my follower count. Like it's okay to miss some of the things we took part in and in part made happen over there but it also rewarded the most self hating parts of my psyche, who really don't need any encouragement.
@sineadredmond @blindboyboatclub So true, thanks Sinead.
I am finding its like a new diet or exercise regime. I know its better, I am happier, but any excuse can pull me back to the couch of drama, breaking news and clickbait!
@noinini @blindboyboatclub yeah I occasionally do look back in, nearly by accident, but I find I see things being advertised to me before anything I actually want to see and it immediately puts me off again! Still, it's hard to let go of the familiar isn't it?
@sineadredmond @noinini @blindboyboatclub I find myself having to consciously not dual-post 🫤like if I post something here I kinda want to tweet it as well but that would be like giving up smokes, eating sweets instead and adding few extra pounds, but then starting smoking again anyway 😭
