Mastodon is really having a moment in mainstream news coverage. CNN, BBC, TIME, etc.

The influx of users will continue at an alarming rate. Remember to be welcoming, and kind, and positive, and helpful.

This isn't just an opportunity to improve the idea of social media, it's an opportunity to shine a wonderful light on #opensource.

@killyourfm wait, the mainstream media covers something about Mastodon now!?

🤯

@fudgesiclesxd @killyourfm they don't have a choice now, lol
@fudgesiclesxd Yep, it's all over the place since Elon Musk took over Twitter.

@killyourfm I just mind my business until I check the instance tab and see your post and I was just...

HOLD ON, WHAT!?

@fudgesiclesxd Mastodon just crossed 1 million users today, and I think literally a few hundred thousand were in the past few days.
@killyourfm @fudgesiclesxd active users :P and 6mil accounts in total :) almost 500k people joined since last week alone
@lashman @fudgesiclesxd OH! Thank you for clarifying this.

@killyourfm @fudgesiclesxd not a problem :) but yeah, for all intents and purposes it just means 500k people made an account, and another 500k came back to their old accounts

which is still pretty great :)

@killyourfm @fudgesiclesxd I signed up today after reading an article about it on BBC news.
@fudgesiclesxd @killyourfm yup, one of the BBC tech journalists is even on the MastodonUK server!
@killyourfm let's just hope Elon continues to screw up his handling of Twitter.
@killyourfm really hoping @Mastodon gets its well deserved limelight now. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!
@killyourfm I saw it on Morning Brew this morning and instantly downloaded it.
@katemendoza Neat! I hadn't seen today's edition yet.
@killyourfm Ty I'm actually, new here.
@DeathxByxDalek Welcome! When you're ready, consider posting an #introduction and include some hashtags so people can find you easily :)
@killyourfm
Kind, positive and helpful 👌🏾
@killyourfm that’s why I’m here. Pretty interesting place so far.
@killyourfm Aside from a guide on how to set up an account, I think there needs to be a big ol "Ways in which this is NOT twitter and why that's a good thing"
Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@killyourfm also, it behooves us new folks to behave ourselves and try to get a feel for the place, because this place already belonged to somebody before we got here and having so many new users barge in and start making noise can be overwhelming
@killyourfm I think this is neat but not sure if it’s sustainable outside of techie folks. I guess time will tell.
@dmkjr *nods* The principles behind this network sure are awesome, but I agree that it needs be a little more user-friendly to mainstream/non-technical users.
@killyourfm @dmkjr think 80% of #TwitterMigration users and 99% of users on the bird app now have memory-holed how wonky, notoriously complicated, and jargon-y Twitter was 15 years ago.

@paninid I remember thinking RT meant Reply Tweet, rather than retweet.
I also remember when you had to start your message with a period if you wanted to mention other users in a 'public' tweet, because else it would treat the message as a semi-private message instead.
Or when the character limit was just 140 characters and how people ended up using all sorts of their own link shorteners to avoid long links from eating up their character count. Of course Twitter eventually ended up going for forcing their own link shortener, rather than the approach Mastodon took of just giving links a fixed length count without shortening them.

@killyourfm @dmkjr

@paninid @dmkjr @killyourfm @FiXato it took me a while before I twigged what “LRT” meant back in the day before quote tweets and I’ve been on Twitter for like 13 years.
@killyourfm the hardest hurdle here is the “different servers”. Twitter, while is a mess, puts everyone into one space. Now, perhaps that is good from a “shared ideas” approach, but let’s be honest, folks don’t want good dialogue and criticism just turns to a fight.
@Christy @killyourfm I agree. If we are a society of sharing ideas for let’s say… social development, we are missing the mark if you are joining a community of like minded folks. Secondly, maybe that’s a good thing 🤷‍♂️. If someone tells me Indian food is better than Japanese food, I’m ready to fight.
@killyourfm @dmkjr it's still early days for Mastodon though!
@killyourfm they’re looking for any counter-narrative to throw back at Musk after he completely obliterated their legitimacy.
@killyourfm In Vancouver, BC today, the morning news covered it with the caption: Twitter users moving to Mastodon.
@Creatrix The morning news! That's when you know things are starting to move decidedly mainstream.
@killyourfm thank you for being so patient with all us masto-toddlers, careening around and sticking our fingers into plug sockets to see what it does!
@Caitriona Hey, I'm still learning all the nuances myself!
@killyourfm What's funny is that the mainstream media is only talking about the "Mastodon network" and seem to be completely ignorant of the existence of the Fediverse at large

@scathach They'll get there. This is a predictable cycle when "new" tech emerges. A rush to be included in the coverage, with surface-level information.

The nuanced coverage will come, hopefully.

It's great exposure though!

@killyourfm Eh, so far it seems like this exposure has just brought an influx of Twitter ghouls with their weird obsession over clout and desire to control other people
@scathach @killyourfm I don't really think we need or want "exposure", I like that this is a niche out of the way place for fellow oddballs, I don't want it overran with normies

@Arcana @scathach *Nods* I understand where you're coming from.

Speaking only for myself, I WANT people to come here and discover how awesome it is when social networks aren't controlled by megacorps and billionaires.

But I also recognize that scenario means a lot of the toxicity could come with it.

So, what to do?

@killyourfm @scathach I mean I think the way these people are is a huge part of the problem. It's just a completely different paradigm. A lot of these people want reach and a paraosocial relationship with their followers, I think this places is more suited to friendship and community. I don't want that ruined

@Arcana @scathach I'd like to believe people can unlearn some of the habits and behaviors and expectations that have been beat into their heads by social media.

But I'm always trying to be an optimist.

I mean, I'm one of them. I catch myself saying words like "users" instead of "people." Until recently I had my employer, past employers, and my job role in my Masto bio instead of just...stuff I really love.

@killyourfm @scathach But the thing is the reason why they are so disruptive to the community isn't due to other social media affecting them, it's just how they are as people. I'm thinking of the clout chasers who seek popularity and financial gain above community, that's their personality, not a trait they got from social media

Maybe some will adapt and I welcome that, but the majority essentially want what they had but without an arbitrary figure they find unpleasant behind the reigns

If you're optimistic that's fine, but it's not something I share I'm afraid, I like this place the way it is
@Arcana @scathach Well, the thing is... I can't find any counter-argument to what you've said here.
@killyourfm @scathach @Arcana I can imagine, after we get through the cortisol hangover of addiction to combative sorrow, we won’t have it in our house. It will be so lame we won’t want to bother- just block (and report).
@killyourfm I love the idea of using the word 'people' instead of 'users', to reflect the distributed ownership of people instead of tech giants.

@EsthervdS YES, great observation. (I wish I could edit the post now.)

You know, it's becoming rapidly apparent to me how ingrained certain words are in our everyday vocabulary now. Words that need proper replacements.

Thank you.

@killyourfm @EsthervdS This is a fantastic concept of replacement, while being a technologist , users, has a certain feel, people or persons is certainly much more humanistic.

I feel as if I'm currently in 1) a dialogue with my Linux-professing teen son or 2) the first year at Carnegie Mellon when creative writing people were told we had to pass a Linux course to graduate. Alas, I left. ;) And I used twitter to escape my teens.

Cannot be a disciple for lifestyles, religion, diet, exercise, hair color, or Linux. Literature, bad theory, and translation is are my only gurus. 🖤

@killyourfm And I think it has potential to change the world. Decentralized media. Cooperating. Organizing. Empowering.
