You are the knife I turn inside myself; that is love. That, my dear, is love.

The two writing systems with the most utility

Every writing system has something unique about it. The Latin alphabet, the one we use in English, is the most common across all languages of the world. Ge’ez, Hangeul, and Urdu don’t fall neatly into any of the five categories of writing system. Naxqi Dongba is the only hieroglyphic system in use today. But there are two that I think stand out as the ones with the most utility. Not super easy, maybe, but definitely useful

Arabic in the computer font is different from handwritten Arabic. Handwritten is an inherently messy writing system. The letter س [s] looks like ﺴ when it’s between two other letters, if it connects to both of them, because Arabic is always written in cursive. But that’s the computer font. In handwritten Arabic, the letter ﺴ is just a flat line __. That saves time, but it’s also sloppy handwriting. But still, you can teach learners to read the sloppy handwriting as if it’s a different writing system from the neat one. If you teach a pre-messied writing system, they can write messily, and still be just as legible as if they wrote neatly! That’s a very clever system. And this “messy” writing system saves so much time that my Arabic professor, who is a native speaker, can write in Arabic almost as quickly as I can speak in it. This is a writing system with immense utility, where you can scribble down full sentences in less than a second and still be perfectly legible

The second one is Classical Chinese. Specifically Classical, because Modern Mandarin Chinese isn’t really like this. You can condense sentences that are ten words long in English into sentences that are four words long in Classical. The sentence 好色即淫, 知情更淫 is translated as “To be moved by woman’s beauty is itself a kind of lust. To experience loving feelings is, even more assuredly, a kind of lust”. The sentence 久仰芳名, 無由親炙 is translated as “I have long known of your fine reputation, but never had the chance to meet you in person”. Much information is simply implied, or perhaps able to be figured out by the order of the words. They cut out everything that’s not 100% essential to the meaning of the sentence. And to be able to write so much information not necessarily speedily, but rather concisely, is undoubtedly also of great utility

@ada @julia the xz backdoor got discovered so fast because some random dude with no life poked into it a little too much after noticing slight performance issues. it's a testament to the advantages of free software, actually.
