I've changed quite a few parts on joinmastodon.org/servers today in response to the feedback from the past week. In detail:

You can now filter by region, type of legal entity, and sign-up speed. Added note about why the topics filter exists. Changed tagline.

"Get on waitlist" has become "Apply for an account" for servers that manually review new sign-ups. Removed total user count from cards.

@Gargron Thanks for your efforts here, I saw your interview in TIME magazine. I miss Germany something fierce, I used to live in Baumholder many years ago.
@Gargron working amazing right now. Pics posting immediately thank you
@Gargron is there an API for that server list? I'm trying to build a global/fediverse wide hashtag list to help people organise around hashtags - https://hashtags.fyi - does something like that exist? I've been using instances.social API to get the list of servers to poll for trends.
hashtags.fyi

@Gargron I've heard complaints from people who find the whole "choose a server" thing intimidating. They just want to sign up on Mastodon and take it for a spin. Maybe add an option to get signed up on a random general-interest server.
@isaac32767 @Gargron yes - I think a good ux is for new registrants to get assigned a random instance. Take the guesswork away for people not yet accustomed to mastodon. They can always move later if they want
@johnmark @Gargron Maybe not a completely random server. You wouldn't want to send people to a server where the main language is one they don't speak, or that centers on interests they don't share. Maybe allow server admins to indicate their openness to random new users, and have them specify the languages they speak. Use that to simplify choose-your-server process for people who aren't looking for a specific community right away.
@johnmark @isaac32767 @Gargron whilst you can move to a different server it’s not an entirely trivial process so is not so “new user” friendly that I’d be recommending this option at this stage.
@arden @isaac32767 @Gargron true true... I guess the question is what tradeoffs are acceptable. Most new users find the current onboarding experience difficult to navigate.
@isaac32767 @Gargron that shouldn't be a thing because reading the terms of use is an inherent part of the fediverse culture as it saves the server admins and good faith members a lot of headache.
@edendestroyer @Gargron Why would doing that bypass reading the terms of use?
@isaac32767 @Gargron signing up on a random server may

@isaac32767 @Gargron

I'm one of them, just landed. Afraid to leave now because I might not be able to find my server again? Will my password work regardless of which server I land in next time? I wish there were a platform FAQ, it's not very intuitive for Twitter expats.

Thank you for your expertise and help!

@Gargron very good to see “All servers listed here have committed to the Mastodon Server Covenant.“ +100
@Gargron Thanks—looking forward to navigating
@Gargron You are listening. Thank you‼️
@Gargron great news! Trying to launch a server by mid-week 🤞

@Gargron the plan is to launch a server that is for journalists and public figures. I already have quite a few people “signed up and ready”

MastodonMedia.xyz

@mkarolian Greetings from journa.host. This is one of the things I’ve been wondering about: what happens when there are multiple servers for the same community?

@ianhillmedia @mkarolian

I guess it will allow new signups to choose between which domains they prefer to match their handles. 😜

@ianhillmedia I think it will largely come down to the features the servers offer. I’m planning on offering excellent speed and a unique verification scheme.
@mkarolian Hmmm. You’ve got me going down a rabbit hole here, lol
@mkarolian Stream of consciousness: multiple servers obviously are at the heart of the fediverse and necessary. That said, the number of servers are tripping up folks who are considering migrating right now. I also wonder if different servers on similar subjects creates classism.
@mkarolian That said, I’m literally out here just using this exactly like I used Twitter. Searching for folks I know by username regardless of server. Following them. Interacting with their posts.

@ianhillmedia it is a good question, but I am thinking of it more from a utility standpoint. What can the server do to be uniquely valuable to the user and the ecosystem.

For mastodonmedia.xyz it is about ensuring users across the fediverse can trust that the person who says they are a journalist, is actually a journalist, which right now, they can't.

@Gargron is there a reason some servers have been removed? (e.g. i originally discovered tech.lgbt on that page, and it's no longer there!)
@tarajdactyl @Gargron Guessing they requested to be removed due to increased load of new accounts.
@ailnoth @Gargron that makes a lot of sense, thanks! the server was certainly getting hammered.
@Gargron It's good to have someone who actually cares running the place. <3
@Gargron you getting any sleep? thank you & stay healthy!🙏
@Gargron
They aren't terribly popular over here yet, but any chance you can add a 'sports' category for instances, the only one I've seen so far is allpro.social, but I've seen a lot of people on the bird site requesting that category
@Gargron Would it be possible to add the ability to add content warnings for posts you boost? I’d like to be kind to the people who follow me, while still being an activist for critical, sometimes stressful, issues.
@tafkak @Gargron in general it would be more productive to encourage ppl to use cw’s otherwise the suggested functionality sounds like qt’s in sheep’s clothing.
@Gargron the thing I find most frustrating with Mastodon is needing to know the full 'address' of someone in order to find them to follow when all Mastodon addresses are so different..I've tried and failed to find lots of people today who I know are on here. Frustrating!!

@Jos21Bell @Gargron I think the search on some instances just doesn’t work sometimes (just noticed this on mastodon.world with another account I have). When search is working correctly you can usually just type someone’s username and it’ll show all the instances that have it.

And in Mastodon app it just looks like no results were found instead of displaying an error message or loading indicator (sometimes it displays nothing but if I wait long enough I get a big result).

@bartsz @Gargron yes even hashtag searches aren't working for me. Will persevere for a bit longer and hope it's resolved 🤞
@Gargron I'm curious what the top factor for choosing a server is. Any thoughts on this?

@Gargron I applaud your efforts to move quickly here. One thing that confused me at first was seeing a long list of servers and not knowing which to choose.

I realize that it doesn't entirely matter, but the current documentation could make choosing feel less existential.

@Gargron Yeah it was confusing me looking at it where you could not limit the results by sites with open invites.
@Gargron How to reference a server on this page?
@Gargron would it be possible to show the list of servers that have been blocked by a server on there? Might help people pick servers that are being actively moderated

@simon @Gargron actually, would it make sense for servers to publish moderation stats? (reports / actions (internal & external), domain blocks, etc)

I think the data is existing to be able to provide those stats, though it's been years since I contributed to the mastodon source code.

@Gargron @simon mastodon.social shows the list in the About page. You need to expand the list at the bottom of the page
@andreagrandi @Gargron @simon Simon is asking for a list of servers that are actively blocking other servers, not the list of blocked servers by Mastodon.social
@Gargron It's looking great over there. A load more tooter friendly :)
@Gargron do you have help or are you doing this all by yourself?
@Gargron Good morning and thanks.
@Gargron
Biggest points of friction for me that make it a non-starter to recommend to non-tech friends:
1) the requirement to pick a server up front. I found myself wishing google would host an instance just to avoid having to think about this before I'd had a chance to even see what it is.
2) Server links go straight to sign up pages, instead of a browse page for a peek at what is actively being talked about there
@Gargron Appreciate what you've built here and all the work that goes into it, so a huge thank you first. Secondly, looks like a couple of friends tried to join mastodon.online but never received confirmation emails even after trying the re-send link. Should that be automatic or is there a waiting period or queue for new signups there? (TY again!)
@jhonygutierrez I'm running into a daily e-mail sending limit with our provider. I've raised a ticket to increase the limit.
@Gargron 🙏🏼 ah, that makes sense! Thanks so much the quick response. I'll let them know to stay tuned!
@Gargron good changes, but maybe the idea to find a *server* should actually be more focused on the idea of "Find your community?"
@Gargron How does one submit a server to show up on the list? I got a bunch of requests to "make" mastodon.gamedev.place show up there, but I've no idea how :)
Mastodon Server Covenant for joinmastodon.org

@Gargron Not sure if you're aware, but joinmastodon dot com is a sleazy site that tries to install stuff in your browser. Not sure what to do about that...
