A week ago, I thought it would be quite some time before I'd spend more time in mastodon than twitter. And yet... I'm pretty sure I have today and that may continue.

Crazy.

@mmasnick I fondly recall the day I switched from default interacting with Facebook to Google+. And with sadness the day I switched back :(
@mmasnick This is so much like Twitter/2007. I just can't tear myself away to sleep because there's always another interesting need or idea being posted. Once people get that this isn't a step down, but a step up, much of the resistance will melt away, and our biggest problem will be a sea of snapping fail whales until the economics settle down.
@mmasnick even two days ago I thought the chance of me even bothering to check, never mind post in this place a few times a week would be low. And now I'm thinking the inverse.

@Pwnallthethings @mmasnick

Well, having followed you here after your recent mini-thread on Twitter, I'm just drafting off who you push onto my timeline to find accounts to follow. So from someone you've never met/will never meet, thanks! :)

@Pwnallthethings @mmasnick comparitavely speaking, the signal to noise ratio here, at least this early, is like 100:1, if not even better. no ads, no noise, no mass-scrolling political asshattery, no ads, no surprise-your-timeline-is-not-in-chronological-order-anymore ..
@Pwnallthethings @mmasnick (no ads twice, hah)
@Viss @Pwnallthethings you really don't miss those ads, huh?
@mmasnick @Pwnallthethings i stopped blocking accounts that pushed ads because it didnt scale anymore.

@Viss @Pwnallthethings @mmasnick

The need to rage-tweet is certainly much smaller.

@Viss @Pwnallthethings @mmasnick seriously, it’s so much less toxic over here. Feels like I almost have to put on mental armour and hold my breath when I go on Twitter now. Mastodon is a breath of fresh air. I like it!
@mmasnick The combination of some serious critical mass here and the rapid decline of the birdsite (and roving bands of rabid musk-worshipers over there) has definitely resulted in me shifting my attention from tweets to toots pretty heavily over the past week.

@mmasnick Same here. I’ve used mastodon on and off for years, but never like in the last few days …. The influx of folks changes everything

Hard to know if it’ll stick? But it’s fun so far

@clive @mmasnick It’s a federated diaspora. I don’t think anything like this has been done before. It’s actually described in Neal Stephenson’s Anathem, where advanced groups bug out when there’s a global threat with each group forming a distribution cell. Feels a lot like that!
@glennf @clive @mmasnick Loved Anathem! Not read it for years, I keep looking at it on the bookshelf thinking maybe now's the time to read it again. Going to make it my next read.
@Tomlenegg @glennf @mmasnick Weirdly it’s one of his books I’ve never read — gonna fix that

@glennf @clive @mmasnick Yes - the "antiswarm."

Anathem is my favorite book, btw.

@mmasnick I was hardly on Twitter today. Love it here!

@mmasnick Same. But a lot of that time has been spent finding Twitter friends and followers.

I do have to say I’m liking the unique conversations I’m having on here. Twitter had been all politics.

@mmasnick Same here, Mike, been the case for about three days now for me. It might have happened a few anomalous times back in April but nothing like what it is now.
@mmasnick If we can get PopeHat over here, I won’t ever have to open the bird app again.
@Supertran he's here! joined today! @popehat
@mmasnick @popehat No Way! That’s it. I never have to open the bird app again.
@mmasnick NGL I just discovered it recently and I'm enjoying the interface a lot. Just gotta get the population ported over.
@mmasnick I like to think I have a pretty good imagination, but the eventuality that brought us here was not on my radar.
