Installing an adblocker is the gateway drug into anti-consumerism, which is in turn the gateway drug into anti-capitalism.

Tell all your friends how to install adblockers.

@schratze i'm surprised they aren't illegal
@schratze adblockers are killing the online surveillance industry! And it’s fun
@antifuchs @schratze They are also a very good tool to protect yourself from scams and malware
@antifuchs @schratze Even if you think that "stealing" is worse than the benefit you get from being able to block arbitrary elements, there are adblockers that will allow some ads to go through
https://help.getadblock.com/support/solutions/articles/6000092027-about-the-acceptable-ads-program-and-non-intrusive-ads
https://adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads

In the same vein, I'm genuinely curious about what you think of extensions like NoScript. is it immoral to disable javascript to run on your browser because ads will get caught in the crossfire?
Why does AdBlock allow some ads to appear?

With AdBlock's default settings enabled, you may occasionally run into a non-intrusive ad. That's because AdBlock participates in the Acceptable Ads program. Acceptable Ads defines strict guidelines to identify non-intrusive ads, which AdBlock sh...

@abloo @schratze @antifuchs it's MY browser on MY computer and *I* decide what runs on it and is shown on its screen.
@abloo @schratze @antifuchs i think it is moral not to run scripts from untrusted parties.
As for the ads, I do not block them. I block the running of scripts and tracking. If you like to have ads there are links and pictures, both can be context sensitive.
Eliminating most scripts I can use older hardware and slower internet speeds and am often faster than people with new hardware. This saves resources, bandwidth and energy and does not block all ads.
Fuck boyscouts!
(Sorry but i'm not good in english. The toot is a thinking about art, law and capitalism)
@schratze Except for when sites are ad supported. But the good sites don't use ads that track you. I use both DuckDuckGo and Opera browsers on my phone and you'd be surprised at the amount of sites that I can't use because they block trackers. Pretty much every news and journal site. I know my site has ads that I have no control over, but I don't have the right hardware to host my own so I went the easy route. Hosting a site is more expensive than I thought.
Or use a video game system. I use my Wii U for anime because no pop-up ads saying my computer has a virus. Because it's not a computer and nothing can be downloaded from their browser. A lot of people say it's weird that I still have my Wii U, but it's a solid browser and has some good system features. I believe their browser is based on Opera too.
@schratze the gateway drug into “sovereignism”

@schratze
Tor and I2P is the gateway drug to adblockers, which is a gateway drug to anti-corporateState totalitarianism and neoFeudalism.

Tell your friends to install Tor and I2P.

@dsfgs Honestly it's easier/less scary to just install uBlock Origin than it is to install and use Tor.

@DrewNaylor
Maybe legacy internet is okay in some countries, but living in #Australia we have #DataRetentionLaws. Metadata on all comunication is to be held for two-years. This extends to phone comms.

If one believes their friendships are sacred, then there is nothing worse or scarier than using the clearnet.

@schratze
Adblockers are immoral.
@Camel @schratze ads are immoral.
@gabsimon @Camel @schratze actually, that's a misconception. they aren't immortal, their hp are just high enough that they effectively are immortal. You can kill them by repeatedly healing them, though, causing an integer overflow in their health in the process and setting their health to 0, which is considered a bug
@phseiff @Camel @schratze what if the ads are undead, though?
@gabsimon @Camel @schratze well they can't be immortal when they're already (un)dead, i guess xD
@Camel @schratze I believe that I have the right to choose what servers I connect to and what content I load onto my computer. Also, I believe that once I download content onto my computer, I have the right to edit it however I want to.
@Camel @schratze I apply these principles when I choose not to connect or load content from advertising servers, or remove advertisements from webpages that I have loaded (and are now on my computer)
@Camel @schratze AdNauseam is moral tho
@Camel .hg list of things which are moral (incomplete):
+ ad blockers
+ hormone blockers
+ @Camel blockers
@schratze That’s quite a stretch. Capitalism doesn’t stem from the web, quite the converse, unfortunately.
@schratze booosting this again because it's still true
> It breaks contract of content owner and content consumer, 'I give you content - you watch advertising'.

I never agreed to such a contract 🤷‍♂️
@schratze
You're telling that to an addict now? NOW?! Immoral privacy dealer!
@schratze Whenever I bump into some youtube/website with ads, my eyes burn. I feel like a vampire looking at the sun and wonder: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, how can people stand it? It's unbearable!!!1
@schratze I run pihole. It's incredible how much bandwidth it saves...
@schratze you install an adblocker next thing you know you listen to a six part podcast about how evil Henry Kissinger is
@schratze For the record I use UBlock origin.
@schratze One of the things we did for TROMjaro www.tromjaro.com/ , our custom Linux distro, is to pack Firefox with adblockers and tracker blockers and such. Plus github.com/libredirect/libredi… so you can redirect popular websites to their "trade-free" alternatives (where you don't have to trade your data or attention). And at first I did this because I wanted my parents to stay away from the pesky world of ads and data mining.
TROM-Jaro – a trade-free operating system

@schratze Even marketers install ad blockers.
@schratze And share the youtube vanced apk. Youtube without ads is bliss.
@kkarhan @schratze Newpipe is pretty fucking cool too, I use it for music. But it doesn't support logging in, so to get recommendations, give likes or post comments I use vanced.

@LunaDragofelis @schratze really?

I don't have any account so I didn't bother to login anyway.

Only thing it needs is circumvention of age & login restrictions.

@schratze Bonus Points when you rollout #AdBlockers on every network and system per default.

I.e. #pfBlockerNG on #pfSense / #OPNsense + #uBlockOrigin on Browsers as well as #AdAway on #Android...

@schratze

Really easy. Just download the app.
Adblock Browser.

@schratze @glynmoody we have one at home and the Kids are always amazed how much shit they see at school
@schratze that explains the unreal resistance I face: "Noes, don't install that! I need to see that! It's informative! How am I to buy it if I don't know it's there" hrrnnnggh...
@schratze
How do I block this ad for adblockers?
@schratze @SRDas try the "brave" browser. i've never been happier.
@schratze @dsilverman Not true. I love new electronics toys & the capitalist system that creates them, but hate advertisements. Adblockers just let me choose what companies to follow without being bombarded by unwanted suggestions 🙂
@schratze visiting your family over the festive period? why not gift them with an adblocker
@schratze you're having a field day with this, I see
@schratze Told that every year to all my CS students...

@schratze

Ad-blockers, and, script-blockers, also block drive-by malware installation routes, so are a baseline requirement for anti-hacking insurance policies. :D

@schratze I"m astonished that people are only just realizing ad blockers are a thing after all this time.
@schratze AdBlockers and SponsorBlockers have made many internet videos watchable for me again.
