it has been announced the new "pokopia" game is going to be released exclusively as a digital download or a game key card. this will be the first nintendo published game to be released as a game key card. game key cards are a major threat to video game preservation, as they do not contain the game on the cartridge. they only contain a license to download the digital version of the game. this is a massive problem for multiple reasons, with the biggest issue being when the nintendo switch 2 eshop servers are eventually shut down one day, all game key cards will become useless. this is a massive threat to physical media and media preservation in general.

the silver lining is we have a massive opportunity as a community to show nintendo that we will not tolerate nintendo published games being physically released exclusively via game key card. DO NOT BUY POKOPIA. tell your friends who may be considering it not to buy the game. this game needs to absolutely flop hard so nintendo gets the message that we will NOT condone nintendo published games being released as game key cards. additionally, do NOT buy any game key cards released by third party developers to disincentivize them from releasing game key cards as well. we're on the brink of physical media extinction, and in 20 years it's very likely that pokopia will be completely lost to time unless you were willing to illegally pirate it. DON'T SUPPORT GAME KEY CARDS!
