Worshippers of totalitarian regime are requesting Indian Govt. to ban @Mastodon in India. Demeaning activists, writers, students & branding them anti national wasn't enough, so now they have audacity to crush platforms supporting voices of dissent. What threatened them? Fight against Casteism!
@Gargron It's farcical how they claim, Mastodon suppresses 'normal' voice? So it means who?🤔
May be, Its Castiest, Racist, Xenophobes who are trying to 'normalize' hate!
@BhavanaVarun I don't think they could ban @Mastodon even if they wanted to. They could block mastodon.social on ISP level, but there are over 2,000 other ones, and they couldn't stop new Mastodon servers from popping up.
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon 4 words great firewall of china.
@ice @Mastodon @BhavanaVarun China has already blocked mastodon.social long ago but also cannot block all Mastodon servers!
@Gargron @Mastodon @BhavanaVarun true but what i'm saying india could make their own firewall to block fediverse servers. like i know in russia they were testing a firewall.
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon i would think india should does what the uk does with internet porn but with fediverse servers like ask people id if they are scared. but if i was running a country i would pref the america model where people can look at anything.
@ice @Gargron @Mastodon People must have choices! Absolutely!
@ice @Gargron @Mastodon But its ok to have some regulations also, to prevent deplorable activities over different mediums.
@Gargron @ice @Mastodon Good to know that. Servers are still managing well.
@ice Yes! We pray it doesn't happen here.

Glad, you all are prepared well for all sorts of trickery being used by roguish govts. @Gargron

Try as they might, they can't suppress us. Neither the voices and nor the platforms that have been crucial in supporting the movement of free speech & internet freedom. More power to you all. @Mastodon

@BhavanaVarun @Gargron @Mastodon If the movement to mastodon becomes big, surely the dirty trick dept of govt will try something. But they can't do much because the servers may not be hosted in India & unlike twitter they can't threaten mastodon monetarily.
As a user who speaks regularly against govt tyranny, i feel safer on mastodon. I've finally logged out of my twitter account on all my devices today
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon also if they block mastodon.social @torproject will allow everyone to still access it :)
@kushal @Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon @torproject i would say a good vpn would be better mean that's how the chinese have been getting around the great wall.
@ice @Gargron @Mastodon @torproject @kushal Indians love VPN. Thanks to hawkish regime! 😁😂
@BhavanaVarun @Gargron @Mastodon @torproject @kushal i mostly use the opera vpn but it's because i live in the us and like to watch youtube. but with countries blocking fediverse kinda bugs me because i kinda like seeing normies on here.

@ice @Gargron @Mastodon @torproject

Too many restrictions would suppress, morale of people, whether over internet or in ground reality. Ever since last few years, individual rights hardly hold any meaning. Though, people are trying their best to be vocal about such impositions.
Migrating here, over other platforms was because of these reasons but it seems, majoritarian regime didn't like it. So, they might plan a crackdown.

@kushal @BhavanaVarun it is however very interesting that "ban this site" as a first reaction is now very normalised and I daresay, acceptable. This is likely a nominal fallout of the high number of internet access bans which have become the stock response to any threats of incidents.

It isn't too far away that VPN traffic would be banned too. Nothing essentially prevents such a low hanging fruit decision to be made.

@sankarshan @BhavanaVarun

I am sure they will try to do that and then we will have bigger fights. All of those people taking client calls from home will also be affected in most cases.

@kushal @BhavanaVarun there are examples and precedents of governments attempting (a) a complex firewall (b) cutting off from internet (c) surveillance and censorship. Not that any one of these are absolutes to aspire to and copy - but the means to such ends are now scale tested and implemented.
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon yaay 👏👏👏🙌
@CharismaticSal_ @Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon I would suggest to see x1337x.se . It's a torrent site. They have been trying to censor it for years now, but it is wooly, what it does is just change the domain credentials every few months. It's a tactic, the same could be used by .social. Also now that inditoot.com is there, it would look discriminatory, not that this govt. has anything against being discriminatory but still.
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon Yeah, they are all different domains
@varkychen @Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon so which other instances you guys are joining ?
@skylover_once @Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon I personally don't see a need for that right now
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon More power to you guys. Show them all how its done
@Mastodon @BhavanaVarun @Gargron can Mastadon route communities from one server to other one? If they block even one community that will damage a great deal
@Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon Eugen, these guys once made a list of 6K+ porn sites to be blocked. I use VPN so not sure if they are still blocked. The point is.. don't underestimate the righteous ignorance of idiots.

@Kasheer

#KashmirStillUnderSiege This is how they talk about peace & normalcy.

@BhavanaVarun
The beautiful thing is that kashmiris are used to this and don't lose their mind if they're subjected to long hauled internet shutdowns
@Kasheer Your patience and courage in these moments is unfathomable for me. At times, I have no words.
@BhavanaVarun you can attribute it to the case that we have witnessed it through decades. Not just three but 8 atleast.
And centuries of oppression at the hands of the dogras, sikhs and the mughals.

@ngaravind @Gargron @Mastodon

Scary! Internet Shutdown and Mass surveillance. India seems to top the list. Why the govt. is so obsessed with it?

@BhavanaVarun @Gargron @Mastodon Because they are scared. Their actions have no legal or moral legitimacy. In a country where top 1% controlled 50% wealth in 2014, and controls 76% wealth in 2019, they are scared of democratization of knowledge, and by extension, thought. They are shit scared of what they stand to lose.
@ngaravind @Gargron @Mastodon Govt is tightening the grip over citizens rights. Lesser say means more control. Where are we heading? Still, awareness works and we do what we gotta do to resist all imposition. Ultimate power lies with the people and that's what they fear.
@ngaravind @Gargron @BhavanaVarun @Mastodon Yet another world-beating statistic from the Free Democratic Constitutional Republic of India, under uniquely dynamic leadership @ramakumarr @gnowgi

@BhavanaVarun

They'd also have to ban every other kind of server that federates with Mastodon and behaves the same way: Friendica, Pleroma, Epicyon, Osada - and then there are things like peertube for videos and pixelfed for images and funkwhale for music... all those federate and 'talk' to each other. i.e. if you are on mastodon, you may follow someone on any of the other platforms (and vice versa).

@gemlog Thank you so much for all of these suggestions. I'll share them. Others would find it useful too.
@BhavanaVarun Sanghis don’t have any brain as it seems :)
