The boatyard family and many others in the community have mainly Irish ancestry. Some have come from elsewhere, such as shipwright Finn's partners, sailmakers Dani from Costa Rica and Li Lan originally from China, and Lan's uncle, the master junk sailmaker Li Chaoxiang.

WIP has involved pride, embarrassment, terror, infatuation, impostor syndrome, naïve optimism, despair, panic, resignation, and indifference (not all in the same character). Naïve optimism is easiest, probably because it is ignorant of reality.
