ASJKELON (ANP/AFP) - Twee activisten van de Global Sumud Flotilla zijn voorgeleid in Israël. De rechter heeft hun detentie met twee dagen verlengd.
De Spaans-Palestijnse Saif Abukeshek en de Braziliaanse Thiago Ávila werden afgelopen week opgepakt door Israël, terwijl zij met een vloot van meer dan vijftig schepen onderweg waren naar de Gazastrook. Israël zei 175 mensen te hebben opgepakt. Alle activisten werden vrijgelaten op Kreta, behalve Abukeshek en Ávila. Zij worden gezien als de organisatoren van de Flotilla-actie en werden meegenomen voor ondervraging.
De mensenrechtenorganisatie Adalah zei dat Israëlische aanklagers hadden gevraagd om hun detentie te verlengen met vier dagen, maar de rechter koos voor de helft.
Ávila en Abukeshek zeiden eerder al tegen hun advocaten dat ze slecht zijn behandeld door Israël. Ze zouden onder meer zijn geblinddoekt en in isolatie worden vastgehouden. Ávila zei zo hard te zijn geslagen dat hij twee keer buiten bewustzijn raakte."

Today in Labor History May 2, 1933: In one of his first acts after coming to power, Adolf Hitler abolished all labor unions. Storm troopers occupied union offices across Germany. Union leaders were arrested, beaten, tortured and imprisoned, or sent to concentration camps. On May 10, the free trade unions were replaced by the Nazi-controlled German Labor Front. On that same date, mass book burnings began across Germany. In the coming months, thousands more communists, anarchists and labor leaders, were arrested or murdered. Strikes were banned and workers’ pay plummeted, as prices soared with inflation, while the unemployed were conscripted into the military. Dachau had just opened and had just started receiving political prisoners on March 22 and Goring established the SS in late April 26. Other significant events that occurred in early 1933 were the purging of Jews and Communists from the Civil Service, and the organized persecution of LGBTQ people, Jews, Roma, and people with disabilities.
