@Theresacityinmymind for something similar but a bit sillier, try Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels.

the line between literature and reality becomes increasingly thin, allowing characters in the books and those in "real life" to jump in and out of novels. This leads Thursday to change the ending of Jane Eyre, the joke being that the plot we know in our reality is the far superior change caused by Thursday. This also happens to other classic novels: Uriah Heep becomes the obsequious, and generally insincere character we know, due to an accident inside the book world, and Thursday's uncle Mycroft becomes Sherlock Holmes' brother.
Thursday also finds that the characters in novels are self-aware, knowing they are in a book. They make comments stating they are not needed until page "such and such", rather like actors in a play, and thus have time to help Thursday.
The world of fiction has its own police force – Jurisfiction – to ensure that plots in books continue to run smoothly with each reading. Thursday ends up hiding in a book, and working for Jurisfiction. The book Caversham Heights is a detective novel featuring Detective Inspector Jack Spratt and his sergeant, Mary Mary (listed as Mary Jones in WoLP), who swaps with Thursday. Spratt and Mary get their own Fforde series, the Nursery Crime Division books, and appear in The Big Over Easy and The Fourth Bear featuring crimes against characters in classic children's literature.

Thursday Next - Wikipedia

Rereading/listening to all seven Thursday Next books in preparation for the release of the eighth (and final!!) novel later this year.

In general I have remembered most of the main storylines, but while the book continues forgotten plot details come back to me.

Basically everything about these novels just hit the right spot for me:

  • interesting problems that are solved
  • diverse "meanies" (Goliath!!)
  • humor
  • multiple multiple layers of intricate subplots
  • fallible hero

And a love for language and literature. I am already looking forward to seeing Miss Havisham again!

These books are like a nice hug, an interesting conversation, tasty dinner, a good night's sleep, beautiful museums and walking in nature all rolled up into one book series for me.

All right, #fiberArts arts nerds who happen to also be fans of the #ThursdayNext series:

What might a physical representation of a Textual Sieve be like? A fine net? A web like Charlotte's? What do you think?

This question courtesy of my dream journal: I forgot to set a sleep timer while falling asleep listening to FIRST AMONG SEQUELS, and dreamed about a young artist using my handspun silk single to make just such an art piece, as part of a collection of works inspired by Fforde's novels.

I've reread:The Woman Who Died a Lot by Jasper Fforde in anticipation of the release of Dark Reading Matter on the 3rd of June 2025.

Edit: Sadly the release date has slipped to August 8th 2026.

I love the Thursday Next universe and how Fforde manages to find a new angle for each novel in the series.

In The Woman Who Died A Lot, Thursday is middle aged and hasn't recovered from her injuries, rendering her incapable of jumping into the bookworld. She still has to deal with Goliath and Jack Shit's scheming. As well as the stupidity surplus an impending smiting by the global standard deity and the vestiges of the disbanded chronoguard as well as Gavin Watkins.

I have been waiting for Dark Reading Matter for over a decade and am feeling a little guilty as it is obvious that writing it was difficult for Fforde.

I've read everything he's published in the mean time, but still, a final Thursday novel is a wonderful treat.

P.S.

Perhaps the stupidity surplus can explain recent developments in our universe.

Reader, I celebrated #ReadABookDay!
Today is the day to grab a book - maybe from our #FIDAAC collection?
From #classics like this early 1850 Tauchnitz edition of #JaneEyre to Jasper Fforde's #ThursdayNext #AlternateHistory / #sciencefiction series, today is for all booklovers!

And everyone who reads #FanFiction and works in #InfoSec snickers when they read the article about the security bypass service "OTP Agency".

It also makes me think of Jasper Fforde's #ThursdayNext series.
