As a #thirdculture #POC kid on an all-white team with no interest in sports, I was basically excluded from the solid 20+min watercooler opening chat on Teams re: Canada's Olympic Men's Hockey loss & the NHL players on the national teams.
It's times like those a) I'm glad I don't overshare my personal life (bc I don't relate to any of them) & b) I want to just shut off my camera & surf/scroll non-work stuff until it's over & back to work meeting part. I end up just continuing work on my other screens while they chat, not engaging.
Any of you in similar boats have suggestions on how to dip out until they get on track? Next time I should just "brb"" in the chat, but then I would think that would make them idle chat more until I return.

I don't remember all of the movies I introduced my friends to this way, but they definitely included #TheLastUnicorn, #TheNeverendingStory, and #TheDarkCrystal.

Growing up as a #bilingual #ThirdCultureKid can be fun, but it is definitely weird most of the time.

Filipino Heritage 2of2

Personally, I love cooking nutritious regional dishes (more info in comments) like "pinakbet" for my family. I don't often post about it because my culinary world is so wonderfully diverse, influenced by friends, family, and even past partners.

Being mixed-race myself (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian) has also shaped my understanding of #multiculturalism, something I've experienced firsthand as a #ThirdCultureKid #TCK i.e. someone raised in a culture different from their parents' or their country of nationality.

This month, let's learn more about the diverse heritage, traditions, and achievements of Filipino Canadians. Try a new dish, listen to the music, connect with friends!

Let's use this month to honour the past, celebrate the present, and build an even more welcoming future together! What are your favourite things about Filipino culture? Share below! 👇

@ZenHeathen I'm not sure about the social cues part though. I never know if I'm missing a social cue because of ADHD or because of growing up as a bilingunal #ThirdCultureKid.

That is a prototypical #ThirdCultureKid
Have a seat, let me explain #ThirdCultureKid
Congrats to adult #ThirdCultureKid Steve Kerr for coaching USA Men’s basketball to #Olympic gold.

Stopping in at FB once every couple of months can sometimes be fun.

(yes, me on the far right)

And no, our band did not normally wear these wonderful polyester outfits; we were also in the glee club and served as the backing band.

Is there a word in any language for the sadness and ennui felt by people who have moved around lots and everybody they know and love live in different places, far from each other, and most of those people don't know each other so they rarely see them and are never surrounded by close people? #ThirdCultureKid #ExPat #migration #migrants #language #languages #TCK

@RickiTarr As a #ThirdCultureKid, I've never understood pride in one's location of origin either. No single place is perfect. No single place has everything everyone needs, or even everything one person needs. Every place we humans call "home" requires maintenance to preserve it or change to improve it. And, like you said, none of us contributed anything to the circumstances that led us to be born &/or raised where we were.

Nationalism is just willful ignorance. Patriotism isn't far behind imo.
