Carmarthen’s award-winning restaurant The Warren to close for “hibernation” in September
The Warren, one of Carmarthen’s best-known restaurants, will close its doors after service on Sunday 21 September, with owner Deri Reed announcing the business will go into “hibernation” for a period of reflection and planning.
In a heartfelt statement, Mr Reed said running the restaurant — built on strong human and environmental ethics — had taken a personal toll.
“Behind the front, there’s a man doing his best to keep afloat a business… while also trying to look after himself, his relationships, his home and his community. The truth is, it hasn’t been working for me for some time,” he explained.
The closure, he stressed, is not the end for The Warren. He envisions a future where the space could host community food projects, new collaborations, and continue to “make noise from the streets of Carmarthen” with the support of local people and organisations.
Over the next five weeks, the team will continue to serve customers and honour vouchers, with Mr Reed inviting diners to “help us celebrate the wonderful achievements we’ve made together so far.”
Community pays tribute to The Warren’s impact
The announcement has prompted an outpouring of support on social media, with more than 200 comments posted on Facebook.
Teri Larkin described the news as “a sad but fond farewell” and praised the restaurant for raising the quality of food in Carmarthen and inspiring others. She also highlighted The Warren’s role in launching community initiatives such as Cegin Hedyn CIC and the allotment project.
Anthony Rees commended Mr Reed’s decision, saying: “Well done Deri, takes guts to step off the conveyor and you’re doing it perfectly.”
Others reflected on the restaurant’s inclusive ethos. Alistair LeatherHiraeth recalled how The Warren hosted an LGBTQ+ health board group, calling it “a haven of safety with nurturing food for so many groups and people over the years.”
Visitors from further afield also shared their memories. Lesley Glover, who travels from the USA each year, said The Warren is her “first stop” when visiting her hometown.
