Luciano Darderi vola in semifinale agli Internazionali d'Italia, quinto Masters 1000 della stagione, in scena sulla terra rossa del Foro Italico di Roma. Nella notte, sul Centrale, Darderi ha battuto per 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-0 il 19enne spagnolo Rafael Jodar, stella nascente del circuito mondiale. Già capace di salvare quattro match point contro Alexander Zverev, Darderi giocherà contro Casper Ruud la sua decima semifinale ATP, la prima in un torneo di categoria superiore ai 250. Ottavo italiano in semifinale agli Internazionali BNL d'Italia nell'era Open in singolare maschile, Darderi salirà almeno alla posizione numero 16 nel ranking ATP.
Il match di quarti di finale è pure stato interrotto per scarsa visibilità, data dai problemi arrivati dal fumo dei fuochi d'artificio provenienti dallo stadio Olimpico dove si è svolta la finale di Coppa Italia tra Lazio e Inter. L'interruzione è avvenuta dopo che il fumo ha dato problemi all'occhio di falco che ha chiamato un dritto di Darderi out che era ampiamente dentro. Il match era sul 6-5 per lo spagnolo e battuta per l'azzurro. Che è poi riuscito a trionfare e a qualificarsi.
