Scende in campo l'ex ministro britannico della Salute, Wes Streeting, che ha confermato la sua candidatura a leader del Partito Laburista durante il suo primo discorso tenuto dopo le dimissioni dal governo. "C'è bisogno di una competizione appropriata con i migliori candidati sul campo e io vi prenderò parte - ha detto durante un evento di un Think Thank a Londra - Se un candidato pensa di essere abbastanza bravo per l'incarico di vertice, metta alla prova le idee contro i loro rivali".
Streeting ha spiegato di non aver voluto forzare una competizione immediata, poiché "non era nell'interesse del partito" avere una competizione prima che Andy Burnham a - sindaco di Manchester - vesse avuto la possibilità di tornare in parlamento. Streeting ha ribadito il suo appello a Starmer affinché "definisca un calendario di successione alla leadership" e "dia ai suoi ministri la libertà di nominare chiunque ritengano opportuno come leader del nostro partito e primo ministro del nostro Paese".

Streeting explained that he didn’t want to force an immediate competition, as “it wasn’t in the party’s interest” to have one before Andy Burnham – the mayor of Manchester – had the opportunity to return to Parliament. Streeting reiterated his call for Starmer to “define a timetable for the leadership succession” and “give his ministers the freedom to nominate whoever they deem appropriate as leader of our party and Prime Minister of our country.”

Dopo la debacle dei labouristi alle recenti elezioni amministrative, scricchiola il governo britannico. La ministra per le Comunità, Miatta Fahnbulleh, ha rassegnato le dimissioni e chiesto al premier Keir Starmer di fare altrettanto. In una lettera condivisa su sulla piattaforma, la ministra si dice orgogliosa di quanto fatto finora pur riconoscendo di non aver "agito con la visione, il ritmo e l'ambizione che il nostro mandato di cambiamento ci impone". Per Fahnbulleh, il paese "si trova ad affrontare sfide enormi e la gnete chiede a gran voce un cambiamento di tale portata" e, rifererendosi a Starmer, ha detto: "L'opinione pubblica non crede che tu possa guidare questo cambiamento, e nemmeno io lo credo. Pertanto, ti esorto a fare ciò che è giusto per il Paese e per il partito e a stabilire un calendario per una transizione ordinata, in modo che una nuova squadra possa realizzare il cambiamento che abbiamo promesso al Paese".
Da Downing Street, però, la risposta è no. "Il Partito Laburista ha una procedura per contestare un leader e questa non è stata attivata - dice Starmer - Il Paese si aspetta che continuiamo a governare. Questo è quello che sto facendo e quello che dobbiamo fare come governo". Niente marcia indietro, quindi. Starmer si assume la "responsabilità di questi risultati elettorali e di realizzare il cambiamento promesso".
Per innescare la procedura di cambio del leader nel partito, un deputato deve anzitutto comunicare al Comitato esecutivo nazionale la propria intenzione di lanciare la sfida. Dopodiché può iniziare a raccogliere il sostegno formale: per ottenere una competizione elettorale sarebbe necessario ottenere l'appoggio del 20% del gruppo laburista. A quel punto il leader in carica verrebbe automaticamente inserito nella lista dei candidati. L'emittente britannica Sky News spiega che, sebbene 78 deputati abbiano chiesto pubblicamente le dimissioni di Starmer, tali richieste non attivano alcun meccanismo all'interno del partito per dare avvio a una competizione.

In a letter shared on the platform, the minister says she is proud of what has been achieved so far, while acknowledging that she has not “acted with the vision, the pace and the ambition that our mandate for change demands.” For Fahnbulleh, the country “faces enormous challenges and the public is demanding change of such magnitude” and, referring to Starmer, she said: “Public opinion does not believe you can lead this change, and neither do I. Therefore, I urge you to do what is right for the country and for the party and to establish a timetable for a smooth transition, so that a new team can deliver the change we promised the country.”
However, from Downing Street the response is no. “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and this has not been activated - says Starmer - The country expects us to continue governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a government.” No backing down, then. Starmer takes responsibility for “these election results and to deliver the promised change.”
To trigger the leadership change process within the party, a Member of Parliament must first communicate to the National Executive Committee their intention to challenge. Following this, they can begin to gather formal support: to achieve an electoral contest, 20% of the Labour group would need to back them. At that point, the incumbent leader would automatically be included in the list of candidates. The British broadcaster Sky News explains that, while 78 MPs have publicly asked for Starmer’s resignation, these requests do not activate any mechanism within the party to initiate a competition.
