In Norse mythology, valkyries would take vacations from their duties by putting on magic cloaks of swan feathers, and flying around the Earth as swans. They would alight in hidden pools, take on human form to bathe, and punish any mortals who saw them there.

In Norse mythology, when the god Baldr (crown prince of Asgard) died, the death goddess Hela said he could come back to life if everything wept for him. Baldr was so beloved that even the gods' enemies wept, as well as trees and rocks. Only the giantess Thökk didn't (who some say was Loki in disguise).

According to Norse mythology, the immortal squirrel Ratatoskr runs up and down the world tree Yggdrasil. He is delivering messages (often insults) between the huge eagle who sits at the top of the tree and the dragon Níðhöggr, who dwells beneath one of the roots.
