Why are there both TMP and TEMP environment variables, and which one is right?

Today's SQL Server oddity: is a PERSISTED column really persisted? Execution plans cast some doubt.

🔹 Create a #temp table with one VARCHAR column
🔹 Add a computed column that casts the VARCHAR to an INT (specify the computed column is PERSISTED).
🔹 Query the #temp table.
🔹 Notice the execution plan warning: "Type conversion in expression (TRY_CAST..."

Is SQL CAST-ing the VARCHAR to INT every time the computed column is queried?

I do not know what to think of this.
