Now more important than ever.
In the US, there has been an initiative circulating for several years — "Books Unbanned" — to combat censorship and provide digital library access / eCards:
https://booksunbanned.com/
Link to libraries providing eCards (free, of course!):
Inspired by the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement and the Library Bill of Rights, Brooklyn Public Library founded Books Unbanned in 2022 to support the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, form their own opinions, and work together with peers across the nation to defend and expand the freedom to read.
Your public library is your good friend. Here's what mine (Munich, Germany) gives me for €20/year:
- Books, of course. For free when I return them on time
- CDs, DVDs, Computer games
- Access to millions of statistics via https://statista.de
- Newspapers and magazines via https://pressreader.com
- English ebooks via https://overdrive.com
- German ebooks via https://onleihe.de
- Plant seeds
- and much more.
There was no sense of impending doom in any of the libraries, only a sense of commitment to the local community. Lots of flyers on bulletin boards for counseling sessions, pride month celebrations, concert notices, housecleaning help, or art contests.
Hopefully we’ll be able to keep all 66 of these facilities open and thriving in the communities they serve so well.
Love Stephen King. He'd scare me, too, though. 😁
