@amyfallon

It's a glorious and inspirational space, but I have to admit that when I work in the SLV, for preference I tend to use the Redmond Barry Reading Room instead, as I prefer the more subdued lighting level.

Redmond Barry Reading Room

State Library Victoria
Have been working here today, such a fab spot. Plenty of space. And you don’t have to get there at the crack of the dawn to get a desk like the British Library too. It’s now got its own subway as well! #Melbourne #libraries #statelibraryvic #Australia #work
@wragge (5/5) Another tool eventually needed for this to keep growing is a way of finding maps in the collection that are digitised but not yet geolocated. (But maybe this is a recommendation to come out of your initial #StateLibraryVIC residency.)
If you’re interested in the history / heritage of a place in #VictoriaAU - be it a house, street, town or suburb - be it your own or an ancestor’s - including who lived there! - check out @wragge ‘s new discovery thing https://slv.wraggelabs.com/myplace/ using the digitised resources of #StateLibraryVIC. #houseHistory #familyHistoryAU
my place: exploring the State Library of Victoria's collections by location

As is his custom Tim @wragge Sherratt undersells (above) what he's done.

He's programmatically geolocated "18,603 out of 20,644 photos" digitised by #StateLibraryVIC.

Tim: "When I started working on the collection I wasn’t really sure what was possible." So he learnt, tried, adapted, all with a goal in mind. Tim has an uncommon mind and set of skills. And uncommon productivity. His article is easy to read - if needed one can skim the more technical detail. Tim documents his methods to be shared.

(1/3) I recently took advantage of Tim @wragge Sherratt's #SLVResidency to see what #StateLibraryVIC maps might be useful for mapping scenes of the 1850s Australian gold rush. I found a perfectly suited 1853 map of Mount Alexander / Bendigo goldfields. The neat part is using the @IIIF map tiles via #AllMaps without having to go through #MapWarper. #digitalHumanities
