Have been working here today, such a fab spot. Plenty of space. And you don’t have to get there at the crack of the dawn to get a desk like the British Library too. It’s now got its own subway as well! #Melbourne #libraries #statelibraryvic #Australia #work
@amyfallon It is uplifting working there, especially now they have lifted the old cover off the dome and allowed the light to pour in.
@perkinsy oh didnt know that had happened.
La Trobe Reading Room

State Library Victoria
@amyfallon spent years studying in the “dark library” every semester prior to exams. Fantastic place, as there were plenty of seats, relatively quiet and no glaring lights. Just nice yellow glow 💡 from the green lamps 😔 cc @perkinsy
@peterrenshaw @perkinsy yes it was in The Newsreader I think?
@amyfallon nice to see it being appreciated, it’s a really great place to work. My favourite spot is the arts reading room, quiet, comfortable chairs, lots of light. I go to the Guild Cafe area when I need an impromptu standing desk, and Mr Tulk for caffeine.

@amyfallon

It's a glorious and inspirational space, but I have to admit that when I work in the SLV, for preference I tend to use the Redmond Barry Reading Room instead, as I prefer the more subdued lighting level.

Redmond Barry Reading Room

State Library Victoria
@imalcolm oh yes I think I also went in there.

@amyfallon

It's not spectacular, but I had fond memories of that room from visits as a kid, when the building was still the National Museum, and that room was a natural history gallery,.

I used to write in the La Trobe room when the dome was still covered in copper, and had a similar subdued lighting vibe as the Redmond Barry.

Switched when La Trobe was unavailable during restoration, and just never went back, but I do pop in to look at the dome as it's just such an amazing space. 🤩

@amyfallon Have you been to docklands library yet? It's stunning. Right on the waterfront. Kickarse makerspace too. You can print yr own 3d whistle for free! :)
I went to a gig to see Stereogamous play in that very space you've photographed, and it was rather surreal.
@gusseting wow! Yes I went to the Docklands one in 2024 and will also go again before I go.
