The novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn was released 35 years ago in May 1991, kicking off the Star Wars Expanded Universe and reviving the Star Wars brand that had been left inactive since the end of the children comics Droids and Ewoks since March 1987.
The comic Dark Empire followed in December, and the second novel Dark Force Rising the next year.
And by 1993, the Expanded Universe became the multimedia giant as which we now it today. All starting with this.
Back in the early #StarWars Expanded Universe, the fly boys from Rogue Squadron with their flashy X-Wings got a lot of page space (9 novels and 37 comics) and even their own games.
I would love to see a series about a Y-Wing squadron, carrying the early Rebellion on their back before all the cool and shiny new hardware trickled in over the years. 😄
I also find it very interesting to realize that the entire post-Emperor, New Republic Expanded Universe was mostly published over the span of only five years.
1991 started the EU with the first Thrawn book and the Dark Empire comic.
When the third Thrawn book came out in 1993, The Truce at Bakura and the X-Wing game were already arriving and then it went overdrive from 1994 to 1998.
1999 had four more X-Wing novels, and that was it.
All Prequels and NJO from there.😐
As a big Star Wars fan in the 90s, I was always sceptical about the idea that Boba Fett would have survived and could come back in the Expanded Universe.
But turns out, Boba Fett surviving was already established in the Marvel Comics (which the mainstream EU decided to completely ignore) in 1983, just half a year after Return of the Jedi.
The outfit is just too cool for fanfic writers with a license to not bring back immediately. 😄
