#Staffa is a geological marvel. Formed by rapid cooling lava millions of years ago, its cliffs consist of high towering basalt columns, some straight, some bent, some twisted in many directions.

At one end of the island the basalt formed caves, the largest of which is accessible via a footpath from the dock. The other tip of the island is inhabited by a few #puffins which can be spotted when they enter or leave their nests.

The uncontested highlight of this trip to #Scotland and possibly the whole year: a boat ride to Th# islands #Staffa and #Lunga off the coast of the misty Isle of Mull.

It is incredible just how close one can get to the #puffins breeding there. And how close they would fly by our heads, diving into the raging sea from cliffs thirty meters high.

Staffa
Staffa is an island of the Inner Hebrides in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The Vikings gave it this name as its columnar basalt reminded them of their houses, which were built from vertically placed tree-logs.

The island came to prominence in the late 18th century after a visit by Sir Joseph Banks. He and his fellow-travellers extolled the natural beauty of the basalt columns in general and of the island's main sea cavern, which Banks renamed 'Fingal's Cave'. Their visit was followed by those of many other prominent personalities throughout the next two centuries, including Queen Victoria and Felix Mendelssohn. The latter's Hebrides Overture brought further fame to the island, which was by then uninhabited.

The council of puffins. These birds are fantastic. They look good, very friendly and here there were so many. #staffa #lunga #scotland #birdphotography #naturephotography #visitscotland #vogelfotografie #vogels #birds

Finished Cave Chorale, the second piece in my paintings and Chorales.

The lyrics are selected lines of the poem Staffa by John Keats. My piece is also inspired by Mendelssohn's overture, I put it in the same key for the essence of it.

The videos are from my trip last March 😊🏞
