Played recently the two indie 3D platformers Spark the Electric Jester 2 and 3. They're... extremely Sonic Adventure 2 Sonic stages (positive) only with much, much, much less jank controls. It is impressive how well the two 3D Spark games control despite moving so fast and having momentum-based movement. It's very much a different way from how the later Boost Sonic games or Frontier went with that kind of platforming. The level design is also really good, with a lot of diverse challenges or just cool set pieces... and I'm just vulnerable to Spark 2 ending on not!Final Rush from SA2.
The weird parts of the games are the use of character action style combat for bosses and more major enemies; Spark 3 integrates it better, while 2 just scattered it awkwardly throughout levels. It's not really my thing, but it doesn't detract from the game? 2 at has the incredibly fun "parry even while doing other stuff" button that works on all damage, including flying through force fields.
The games have the energy of a completely incomprehensibly messy mid-00's webcomic in an amusing way. Like... Spark 2's plot is something about a robot who's designed to look like Spark trying to find his identity? Maybe? I asked a friend who's played Spark 1 (a 2D game I can't get to work on Linux and am less interested in) if that made 2 make any more sense, and the answer was no. 3 is just... incredible in the levels of intentional absurdity it goes to.
Overall, had a great time playing them, albeit I like 2 a bit more than 3 because 2 is a short, evocative sketch of a game while 3 has a lot more meat to it... and therefore has some awkward progression mechanics. Plus 2 has a fake Crush 40 boss theme, which is the greatest thing.
Just gonna share a playthrough of one of my favorite levels.
The entire Spark series is currently on sale on Steam here for ~$20, FYI.
