Has anyone been able to get a valid conforming #ODF document result out of The Document Foundation's ODF Validator with an ODT file created by a non-OpenOffice derived word processor? It seems the validator just never finds a valid result with an ODT document produced by WordPad (supposedly ODF 1.1, yet not versioned at all), MS Word 2019 (supposedly ODF 1.2) and SoftMaker's TextMaker 2024 (more probably ODF 1.2 or 1.3, but versioned 1.0).

Hey everyone,
does anyone have any experience of #SoftMaker office or #Ashampoo office as a replacement for #MicrosoftOffice?

I've tried LibreOffice and although good, it's not for me.

I do a lot of my freelance work on Word, and need it mainly for editing, track changes and that sort of thing. As long as the general shortcuts still work, I'm looking to go with a European alternative to Word. I use Excel sparingly, but use a spreadsheet to track finances and occasionally use it for work, but not with any real equations.

Seit fast einem Jahr nutze ich meinen Microsoft-Account nicht mehr und plane auch nicht, daran etwas zu ändern.

Bei der Arbeit leider noch sporadisch im Einsatz.

Meine Alternativen:
MS Windows --> Linux (hauptsächlich Fedora)
MS Office --> #Softmaker FreeOffice
MS Teams --> #Infomaniak #kSuite
MS OneDrive, Skype & Co --> #Nextcloud

Will ich mich hier selbst bauchpinseln?
Nein - In letzter Zeit habe ich immer wieder entsprechende Posts anderer User:innen gelesen - das hat mich motiviert, gleichzuziehen.

Es ist ein kleines Stück Selbstbestimmung - und vielleicht ein Signal an alle, die mit sich hadern: Ihr seid nicht allein. Es gibt Alternativen.

Nebenbei bauchpinseln und gebauchpinselt sind so schöne Worte - die sollten mehr Zuwendung erfahren ;)

Mein Arbeitgeber (IT Consulting Unternehmen) hat die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt und wendet sich mehr und mehr von #Microsoft ab.

Nächste Schritte: Ersatz für MS Office durch #Softmaker Office und #EMClient als Ersatz für Outlook. Und als nächstes schauen wir uns #OpenXChange an.

Alles europäische Unternehmen. Ich begrüße das!

Back to original LibreOffice document, open in Microsoft Word, which does support ODT. Surprise, everything looks fine, you can even add more list items to it.

Save and back to LibreOffice: Bang! Everything is on Level 1.

ODT is a standard. How can that be? Are we still not focused on one thing and one thing only: Create an alternative to MS Office that _ordinary people_ can use without getting a headache! That Just Works?!

I'm left pondering whom to file bugs with.

@AwetTesfaiesus Wenn Du eine Alternative möchtest & für Geschwindigkeit und Handlungsfähigkeit eine nahtlose #Kompatibilität zum MS Formaten brauchst, bleibt für Dich aktuell nur #SoftMaker Office als veritable Option. Habe in den letzten Jahren in diversen Projekten in Unternehmen unterschiedlicher Größe Office-Varianten getestet. Leider gibt es (wünschte, es wäre mittlerweile anders) bei #LibreOffice noch immer zu viele Probleme auf der letzten Meile und #OnlyOffice entfällt berechtigterweise schon wegen der undurchsichtigen Herkunftsstruktur. Mehr Alternativen gibt es für Dein Nutzungsszenario nicht - aber Du hast damit immerhin ein sogar in DE entwickeltes Produkt für einen Test. Erst einmal meinen #Respekt, dass Du eine Alternative suchst - wichtiger denn je derzeit.

So, a story about #fonts and #software .

I am currently enamored of the Ovo font. I noticed SoftMaker Office, my main office bae nowadays, doesn't show Ovo as bold when I tell it to bold it. Nor does it export a PDF with the bolded parts bolded.

LibreOffice does it with no problem.

Curious, this. I dug into the SoftMaker support forums, and there's a thread.

Short answer: Proudly working as intended. Ovo doesn't include a "bold" variant, so SoftMaker Office doesn't simulate one by adjusting the rendering weight. It would be inappropriate and ugly, they say.

How very stereotypically German of you, SoftMaker GmbH. You may be my bae for now but I am not sure I find this endearing.

Falls jemensch mal Softmaker Office (TextMaker, PlanMaker, Presentations und BasicMaker) probieren möchte: Die 21er Version gibt es gerade gratis im Heise-Adventskalender: https://www.heise.de/download/blog/2025-Tuerchen-13-11098664
Taucht das was? Unbedingt! Rettete mir vor Jaaaahren den Abgabetermin einer Abschlussarbeit, nachdem der sogenannte "Platzhirsch" zwei Tage vor der Abgabe das Dokument völlig zerschoss und das auch mit dem BackUp vorhatte. Und seitdem ist es bei mir.
SoftmakerOffice gibt es übrigens auch für Linux.

@[email protected] #LibreOffice is open source and free, compatible with MS office formats too. I am using #SoftMaker Office though for better performance, but it's not free. Zoom should work well, I have used it many times on #Debian. Not sure about Dropbox though.
