@markvanbijnen Let's first get it working.. Turned off DHCP in the Ziggo modem and on in the Pi-hole.
In the logs and clientlist of the Pi-hole I can see my laptop's IP address coming up. So far so good.

But: nothing is blocked. It looks like the whole functionality of the Pi-hole is bypassed.

So, stil working on that...

Turns out that the Ziggo Smartmodem is programmed to ~not~ accept local IP addresses as DNS server. 😡

To make things work I need to setup the PI-hole also as DHCP, and turn off the DHCP from the Smartmodem.

Can do that!

So, with a little slack.

I successfully got my Raspberry Pi to run Pi-hole.

The only thing now is that my Ziggo Smartmodem will not accept the Raspberry Pi's IP address as DNS server...

I didn't use an acoustic coupler like that but the lab I worked in one summer had a couple in the storage room.

I still have this from my first modem, which considering my #AuDHD is amazing.

The #Hayes #Smartmodem had a separate data mode (in which bytes are sent/received over the phone line) and command mode (in which the computer sent commands to the modem itself).

Switching from command to data mode was simple: send the command `ATO`.

The reverse was more complicated. The modem would switch from data mode to command mode whenever the computer tried to send the special character sequence `+++`, with a delay before and after the sequence.

I'm looking to build a #zimodem or something similar using an #ESP8266 or #ESP32 for some throwback #BBS 'ing or perhaps connecting to a Linux system. For this, I was hoping that it would be easy to find an old dead #Hayes #SmartModem or something similar in solid, preferably metal box - but we're apparently not that sentimental and a little too efficient at recycling stuff in these parts 😱

For those digging the idea, and wanting to go ALL in, there's the Noisy Zimodem. Someone took the time to combine a Zimodem and a DAC for producing authentic modem sounds. If that doesn't take you back to the awesome #90s, I don't know what will.
