Gadi Lehavi, 21 April 2025

Here are four photographs of pianist Gadi Lehavi playing with the Ari Hoenig Trio last night at Smalls in the West Village. This is my second time seeing this incredible trio live. They are tight. All three musicians (Hoenig, Lehavi, and bassist Ben Tiberio) work magic, individually and together.

Last night, I happened to be seated closest to Lehavi. He listens intently and plays with joyful intensity. At times, he can barely stay on his bench, and I’ve tried to capture a little of that here. He moves — better, the music moves him — in and out of the light, around the frame, and in and out of focus.
