Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei

Plot: Deep in the countryside, Kusunoki Minato is left in charge of a terrifying house overflowing with evil spirits—or at least it was, until his extraordinary ability cleared them all out! Instead, a procession of unique and peculiar gods is drawn to the comfort of the purified Kusunoki residence, and Minato spends his days relaxing in the company of his spiritual neighbors. What else lies in store for Minato as he lives peacefully surrounded by gods? (Source: Yen Press)

Story: Τhe story is fairly straightforward and never tries to be something it isn’t. There is some action here and there, but it rarely lasts long. Even the final confrontation felt rather anticlimactic. That said, I think that’s intentional. This is an iyashikei series first and foremost, so peace and balance are restored quickly, and there is no need for a drawn-out battle. The conflicts exist more to bring the characters together than to serve as the main focus of the plot.

What the series really cares about is the relationships that develop between humans, gods, and spirits. Watching Minato interact with all these different beings and gradually learn to use his powers was enjoyable. The story also touches on the idea that humans have forgotten the gods, causing them to weaken and, in some cases, grow resentful. Minato ends up acting as a bridge between both worlds and as a protector of the bonds that still remain.

Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei itself reminded me a little of Shabake, especially in the way supernatural beings are woven into everyday life.

Characters: No particular character stood out above the rest, mostly because many of the gods don’t receive enough development to leave a strong impression. The story is largely carried by Minato and Yamagami, whose growing friendship forms the heart of the series.
Amaterasu, Susano’o, and Tenko fit familiar archetypes.

Amaterasu is seen scolding her younger brother a lot, while Susano’o acts like a bit of a crybaby despite his status. Their sibling dynamic is entertaining enough, even if it isn’t particularly deep.

Tenko was probably the most interesting of the supporting cast. She is cautious around humans and for good reason. Having encountered many bad people throughout her life, she prefers to keep her distance. Her rivalry with Yamagami is fun to watch, but beneath it there is clearly mutual respect. The moment she shielded Minato from danger and admitted that he was “good people” showed that she cares more than she lets on.

Animation: The animation is really well done and detailed.

Overall: I liked Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei for what it was: a relaxing story about friendships, trust, and the connection between humans and the supernatural. It never aims for high-stakes drama, and I think it works better because of that. While some of the gods could have used more development, I enjoyed spending time with the cast and the world they inhabit.

The “See you soon!” message after the final episode certainly sounded like a promise, and if a second season is on the way, I’ll definitely be watching.

Score: 8/10
