Thinking back to one of my favorite tree-related expeditions. These are Brewer Spruce (Picea breweriana) trees, located 3300 ft/1000 m above sea level in the Siskiyou Mountains of SW Oregon.
They have a limited distribution, and are only found at high altitudes in this remote mountain range. Even in July, they were shrouded in fog.
This species is considered one of the most genetically basal, pointing to a North American origin for all spruces.
