My name's Adam! I live in Tacoma, WA. I love maps, nature, plants, gardening, and cooking.

My folks are drying out some doug-fir lumber that they sawed up on their small-scale mill (all from trees sustainably thinned out from a crowded forest). These will take some months to dry out, but once done, helps avoid cracking from shrinkage.

The UV flashlight I bought for the fluorescent minerals in our rock collection came in handy in an unexpected way.

Got some turmeric stains on my shirt last night while making Indian food.

Sunlight has long been used to get out turmeric stains (the UV in sunlight does the trick). After a pre-soak in OxiClean, the stain turned bright purple due to the pH change. After 10 minutes in front of the UV flashlight, the stain was gone. #laundry #cleaning #cooking #turmeric

Put an ice pack on the back of my (well sealed) elemental bromine sample. Bromine is one of the few elements that is a liquid at room temperature.

In this video, the ice pack forms a cooler area at the back of the glass sphere, causing bromine to condense into small droplets, which then fall down and collect to form small streams of liquid bromine.

My best guess is the bromine collects at the bottom, then revaporizes due to pressure loss within the sphere. #science #chemistry #bromine

Is there a pro-metric US group on Mastodon? Can't seem to find one but open to creating one if there's interest. Have personally converted to metric.

On the note of "sounds impossible, but is true and there's even a Wikipedia article about it", tropical cyclones have actually hit Russia before, just in the Russian Far East.

If you're in Tacoma or Pierce Co., you may have just got a second ballot (for the Pierce Conservation District board).

Once you sign-up to receive them, you keep getting them when an election is happening.

Why they don't go out with the regular ballot is an odd quirk of WA state law (it's complicated). It's too late to request one for the current election, but you can still sign up on their site and be eligible for the next. #tacoma #piercecounty #washington

If some of the plants look . . . yellow or nutrient deficient, that was part of the motivating factor in making this, to make an organized fertilization plan.
My latest pet project is a digital houseplant inventory. Turns out we have 107 different plants (103 species) from 35 different plant families. I have an outdoor version going, but I think the indoor plant diversity has it beat. #plants #gardening #tacoma
Had a nice day out at the Port Observation Lookout the other week. Very sunny day and the seals/sea lions were chilling. #Tacoma #Washington #pacificnorthwest
