I have seen it once. That secret, that everyone knows, but time and time again people have to rediscover it. A way to defeat a hierarchy of power.
Back in 2018 Putin’s state bureaucrats decided that it will be a good idea to create a large dump for trash and industrial waste from Moscow in Urdoma – in Archangelsk region. They found a spot for it – a little place called Shies. Quickly rolled a fake public discussion. And the construction workers and security forces moved to start a project. But, something unexpected happened. Something, that was forgotten in Putin’s tyranny for a long 7 years since 2011. Locals started resisting. Burning bridges, sabotaging machinery, creating booby-traps on the roads, establishing entire protest camp and calling for everyone’s help.
Most of the time during protests against the regime – this part, when people called for solidarity was a weak point. No one usually answered. At first it was a truth for them as well, however, locals from Urdoma were PERSISTANT, they were doing it again and again despite all odds, turning protest into a job, into their life. And entire Russia started answering. Anarchists, communists, opposition activists, libertarians – everyone started going to their camp. Putin’s media was calling protesters “5-th column”, “filthy navalnists” etc. Regime tried, arrests, violence, used FSB and police - but nothing worked. Resistance just keep on going. Construction stalled, because of constant sabotage. And regime surrendered. Just give up on this idea. Conflict lasts for 2 long years to 2020. But persistence is a thing that manage to break through a wall of egoism and indifference even in tyranny like Russia. It has created such inertia that there were no easy way to buy or arrest any leaders. Participation of anarchists give people of the camp idea of direct democracy - a perfect vaccine against FSB bribes and manipulations.
And here is another case, but an opposite one – a terrible fire has started in a mall “evening cherry” in Kemerovo back in 2018. A lot of people got killed. It all suddenly started falling apart from this for a regime. Just one simple question was enough to start a rebellion – how did that happened? – Capital and state bound together with joint interest routinely ignored fire safety for years. When fire started – no one cares, as it usually happens in Putin’s Russia – and around 60 people (some say 300) burned alive. Locals began to protest on the main square in Kemerovo, demanding a new governor, demanding justice, demanding a fall of bloody and corrupted regime. Everyone was on the side of people, entire country was ready to support them. A guy, whose family (sister, wife, 2 kids) was burned alive- start asking questions about corruption to a governor and it was filmed and shown at federal television. A country has remembered a 2011 as a sudden flashback. Only a little spark was enough to start it all again.
One visit of 2 FSB (political police) officers, one big transaction to this guy’s bank account. A little help from bots to boost this guy’s social media - to get more influence over other victims of the fire. And he suddenly had completely forgotten about his dead wife, sister and kids and started talking about “keeping safety of Russia”, resisting “maidan” etc. All movement had disappeared like a wind. After a while, this person spent half of year in USA in some of the elite tourist’s places.
What is the moral of the story? Hierarchy of power and wealth, even a terrible tyranny like Putin’s Russia may give up. I have seen it with my own eyes. This secret is so simple – just squeeze your egoism, think about others, think about movement as a whole and not about yourself. And make it a constant mode of your life not for a some time – but till the end.
Egoists are really easy to manipulate. Ego is a vague concept, and egoists don’t actually know what result is in their best interest. When it comes to a struggle or negotiations with the regime like Putin’s – for egoists - it is all about vibes. FSB with history of using different manipulation techniques, including military parapsychology are vibe kings. Same thing is happening with Ukraine – if everyone thinks only about themselves, they will end up like a guy from my story, who had sold lives of his 2 kids, wife and a sister for a half-year tour to USA and bag of money. However, if western democracies remain persistent no matter what – eventually you may witness a miracle, like in Shies.
