Okay, nerds: Help/direction needed.

I went to a lovely nanna's house today for tea. She's downsizing because she can't manage the stairs any longer.

Anyway, she has this gorgeous naval barometer. It was last serviced by the makers in 1981. Between then and now, the glass tube that houses the mercury has cracked. She wants to get it repaired or replaced.

The original manufacturers went into administration and never recovered. So, over to the fedizens: Where can I get a new glass tube made and calibrated for her?

Notes
===

Maker: Yarley Brothers Clock and Barometer Makers
Style: Yard-long hanging naval barometer (mb/⁰F)
Issue: Crack/fracture in glass tube housing mercury (Hg retained in lower portion of glass.

She understands this will cost money; sentimental value high.

I like this online museum catalogue from the Harvard collection of historical scientific insturments:

https://chsi.emuseum.com/search/*

lots of nice objects, pictures, and good info, plus search seems to work easily and well. So many museums do this badly, or don't do it at all. 🔥 🤔 🤓

Smallest walking robot makes microscale measurements | Cornell Chronicle

Cornell researchers in physics and engineering have created the smallest walking robot yet. Its mission: to be tiny enough to interact with waves of visible light and still move independently, so that it can maneuver, and take images and measurements.

This little mechanical calculator is one of my favorite objects. It came to me with what turned out to be a fouled 10s pin retaining ring; it was a bear to take apart, ‘machine’ a new part, and reassemble. But it works! And I love it!

The tools we use are one of my favorite things about making #QMagnetics #benchtopNMR spectrometers. Yesterday we received new Borite lathe tools with TT-321 carbide inserts. The inserts are supposed to have a 1/64” tip radius. That’s important, so we checked them on an optical comparator. #NMR #scientificInstruments #chemistry #machinist
