The Salt Path thing has proved that you can lie in a book or several books, be not a nice person - a criminal and a liar, and it has absolutely no effect.

If that doesn't say everything about these times, I don't know what does.

(I ranted about this a lot on my old FB

The short story is I used to walk long distance coastal paths, and I got a lot of middle class folks asking me if I'd read the Salt Path.

I took one look at the Amazon listing and smelled a rat, the comments and the description said 'fake'.

Many years later it turned out that all of it, or a lot of it was maybe fiction, and she lied about why she lost the house - it's cos she embezzled money from a business - and that they had another property).

The real Salt Path: how a blockbuster book and film were spun from lies, deceit and desperation

Penniless and homeless, the Winns found fame and fortune with the story of their 630-mile walk to salvation. We can reveal that the truth behind it is very different

'Walking off' illness & the 'sleeping rough' cure--as the #SaltPath proposes--always struck me as implausible and cruel. The publishing industry expects pathography as inspiration porn--juicy victimhood redeemed. I have met this grim reality head on, and (only just) survived. There is so much to say...

As a memoirist with multiple chronic illnesses, I am watching this #SaltPath furore with horror & a certain vindication. This post By Long Covid Advocacy must be read. "...the path of inspiration or the path of the malingerer, no one with illness wins with this story."

The Choice of The Salt Path - Inspiration Porn or Malevolent Malingerer?

The divergent social perceptions that The Salt Path offered - Saint or Sinner - was never a fair binary for people with illness or, from what it seems, rooted in reality.

Author Raynor Winn's 2018 book, "The Salt Path," was a huge hit. It was an autobiographical tale of how she and husband Moth lost their home, Moth was diagnosed with a degenerative condition, and the pair walked the 630-mile South West Coast Path in the U.K. The book sold over a million copies and spawned two sequels and a movie starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs. But over the weekend, reporting by the U.K. Observer called the story into question, casting doubt over the circumstances in which they lost their home, and Moth's illness. @BBCNews has the latest on the tangled tale.

The Salt Path: Raynor Winn hits back at claims she misled readers

The author posted a lengthy statement challenging claims made in the Observer newspaper at the weekend.

But adds nothing to rebut the essence of the claims

Quietly enjoying the unravelling of the #SaltPath phenomenon, not least because I did not find the book interesting. A lot of felt like it was rewritten in the shower. Anti-science, superficial nationalism, badly written.
