RCS Messaging and Chats

Apple is serious about RCS (Rich Communication Services) [1], which is Google's and the mobile industry's attempt to modernize the default SMS/MMS experience on phones.

On 11th May 2026, Apple began rolling out in beta end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest version of Google Messages. When RCS messages are end-to-end encrypted, they can’t be read while they’re sent between devices. Users will know that a conversation is end-to-end encrypted when they see a new lock icon in their RCS chats. Encryption is on by default and will be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations.

I see RCS as a business communication tool for brands, banks, retailers, and delivery services sending notifications, marketing, support messages, etc. [2]. Even WhatsApp also offers business-to-consumer messaging. I am uncertain about the seriousness of RCS in WhatsApp-dominated countries like India. Verified branding and rich messaging open new monetization opportunities since marketing and promotions are a big growth area. Most brands may end up using both RCS and WhatsApp to maximize business engagement instead of relying on one. This carrier verified sender branding is an additional source of revenue for telecom carriers, Google, and now Apple.

While business use cases remain a major growth driver, Google is actively improving RCS to make it a stronger option for personal (person-to-person) messaging [3]. In India most people will stick with WhatsApp unless their contacts shift.
