A quotation from Theodore Roosevelt
If the reactionary man, who thinks of nothing but the rights of property, could have his way, he would bring about a revolution; and one of my chief fears in connection with progress comes because I do not want to see our people, for lack of proper leadership, compelled to follow men whose intentions are excellent, but whose eyes are a little too wild to make it really safe to trust them.Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901-1909)
Speech (1910-08-31), “The New Nationalism,” John Brown Memorial Park dedication, Osawatomie, Kansas

Religious Zealots' Land Grab - Scott Horton and Lex Fridman
We have long had problems with slumlords in the US.
And we have long had codes related to habitability standards in residential buildings.
What #MayorLurie could do is direct the Dept of Public Health and Dept of building inspection to review these codes, and perhaps even more importantly what the penalties are for non-compliance, and work with the departments and if needed state agencies to make sure that the codes and penalties for violation are a) fit for purpose and b) enforced.
But it's much less controversial to say "oh, these are private properties" - Relying on #propertyrights to abdicate responsibility for health and well-being of SF residents.
"I wonder how long it will be before they [the government of the day] go apeshit and use it to open another front in their racist hate campaign against Māori? And will ACT, who back in 2003 claimed to be the "party of property rights" and opposed retrospective expropriation, support or oppose a racist law change?"

"The status of private property in such places is a puzzle that has been vexing the courts for generations, especially west of the Rockies, where roughly 95 per cent of the land remains “unceded” by treaties. In her reasons for judgment in the Cowichan case, the Honourable Madam Justice Barbara Young has offered a way to muddle through it."

See, here's the thing about this worship of property rights: it may take a while, but it always leads to slavery, every damn time.
