Last night I was talking to Mom and I told her about how I walked away from a friend who was very very negative and difficult to be around...they were much younger than me but carried on like a stereotypical crotchety senior, and I just couldn't take it any more.
"People need to see the glass as half full, not half empty!" said Mom.
I responded, "Or you just need to find a good way to refill it!"
She gave me a proud look, and I was proud of myself. I had just come up with that out of nowhere, and I think it was a good line.
The glass may be half full or half empty, but it's got space for something good. Figure that out.
These days I find myself comforted by examples of positive masculinity. Like Mollyboy reacting to Tracy Chapman's *Fast Car *
And the first few minutes of Critical Role's Campaign 4,Episode 12 where Brennan Lee Mulligan and Liam O'Brien (both fathers in their own lives) roleplay soothing a crying baby with humour and tenderness. That doesn't seem to be on YouTube yet, so no link, sadly.
Many men these days don't seem to get that the distant, stoic provider archetype is born of an age where service to your king came before loyalty to your family and women tolerated that status quo under threat of violence. Given a choice, we want a man who will burn the hierarchy to the ground if it benefits our children.
This is the kind of attitude I look for in a husband and father:

I came across this today and I can't tell you how true it is. Even from my perspective being an older man, I graduated high school in 1997 and to this day I find I have to define for myself what it means to be a man. Through no problem with my own father, who I have a sense struggles with the exact same thing but does not know how to talk about it.
