#pgbackrest is dead. What next?

I have been recommending pgBackRest as the best backup tool for PostgreSQL for years. I even wrote a blog post about it. My students at Université Lyon I were able to backup, restore, and perform PITR in four hours with zero prior knowledge of the tool. That is how good it was. I say “was” because David Steele, the sole maintainer of pgBackRest, has announced on the project’s GitHub page that he is stopping all work on the project.

David Steele announced that he stopped working on #pgBackRest, citing a challenge many maintainers struggle with: making a living, and investing time in a project that is used by many. Gabriele Bartolini shared his perspective on his blog:
"When corporate sponsorship disappears and community sponsorship cannot fill the gap, maintainers face an impossible choice: do it poorly, or stop. David chose the latter. He is not the first, and he will not be the last."

pgBackRest's end of life is a reminder of the structural cost of open-source maintenance — and why CloudNativePG's CNCF governance and the virtuous cycle of commercial support matter more than ever.
Pgbackrest is no longer being maintained

Certbot doesn't define CN by default which is required by pgBackRest and OpenVPN as of today. I tried to use a CSR but Certbot doesn't automatically renew those certificates making certbot pointless. I'm now using acme.sh and it just works https://github.com/acmesh-official/acme.sh
