I'm usually very careful about what I read. And its been a while since I've read an author that I instinctively loathed with every fiber of my being. But Peter De Vries is that man. His listless "wit" -- inexplicably still celebrated by superannuated vanilla types without taste -- is little more than dad jokes souped up in the phoniest "eloquence" imaginable. I can't believe the New Yorker published this guy. He's one of the most awful "comedic" writers I've ever read.
